Have had the pleasure of a Boxster S and an 03 STI and out of the box in the real world there was nothing to choose between them performance wise. Scoob was a little better in a straight line, but the Boxster makes up for it in handling.

Sorry, but I really don't get the poor man's Porsche thing. The Boxster is a great car and if you wonder why it doesn't have more power do a search for the company that put the 911 engine in the Boxster and found out why Porsche probably deliberately left the power where it was.... made the Boxster a little too close for comfort to the 911.

i beat a cockey muppet in hes ferrari spider a few years ago,,, diving a mk2 ford fiesta !!

the bloke was pointing at the car i was driving ( was a borowed mates car) and he had some blond bint in the car, i seen her look over and throw her head back with a laugh and the ferrari owner flys off the traffic lights,,, i was ment to be running my mates car in too pps: anyway i went for it, past him and the next set of lights we stopped at it was a reving thing,, he left me at the lights for a bit but as i well aint scared of top speeds i took him again and carried on and never seen him again,,, he seemed to loose he bottle at 80mph on the A1 to the A406,,,, oh that and i was driving a stripped out mk2 fiesta running 235bhp, i loved the car, it was just a animal,,, though totally undrivable

Got to agree with you mate. They are a really nice drive. Different to the buzz you get from an Impreza but still fun. I love my Scooby but the Porsche is still a nice motor. They've got quite a strong following too. Okay, there can be the stereo typical tosser who drives one, but second hand they make quite a good buy. Plus, it's one of the only soft tops that a bloke can get away with driving !!!

Ahh .... a Cossie !!! Now there's a car I regret not owning !!! I remember seeing a white RS500 in my local Ford garage when I was just a kid. It looked fast even when it was just parked in the show room. I would have loved a Saphire, 2WD in moonstone blue !!!

This is usually spoken by tramps who could not afford a new Boxster to start with IMO

honestly, a well built, fully capable car made by a "proper" prestige manufacturer, vs a ****ty jap tin box with a boost increase and a decat exhaust ?

i suspect the Porsche chap was not in the least bit bothered and probably had a right chuckle over his glass of Pimms later in the evening

i once pulled over while bouncing off the limiter in 5th gear (not an RA gear box either) and had a bloke + missus in his porsche come past me like i was parked up

both of them waving and giving the thumbs up, to be honest i thought it was awesome, full respect to the bloke for giving it some beans

I always laugh at this type of comment. It's like saying all Subaru drivers are chavs

Don't worry we can afford a 'proper' Porsche but the Boxster was design from day one as a convertible, the 911 was not and she wanted a convertible. Before my other half bought the Boxster I too was one of these misinformed idiots who thought it was a girls/hairdressers car, how wrong I was. The 987 had moved on a fair bit from the 986, it may not be the fastest 0-60 but it more than makes up for that in the way it handles and the build quality is fantastic not to mention how it looks.

On your second comment, my misses is not a hairdresser and has driven performance cars all her life. So I think she has a pretty good idea what a good car is and she loves her Boxster and I like it too

each to their own, porsche produced the boxster to fill a gap in the market ie, those that did not want (notice i say did not, not can't afford) to pay for a 911 does by no means say its a crap car fact.

personally i think they are a bit femanine buy thats just my view, always reported as a good car but i don't see how you can compare it to a scooby completely different.

by the way i'd smoke em, had a race with a boeing 737 that was taking off the other day by manchester airport left it standing ! he got so peed off he had been wooped he took off literally.

i love these threads.

Nothing wrong with the Boxter's handling (it's actually one of the best rag top chassis out there)... I took one round Kemble airfield on a Porsche experience day.... and fek me did it grip....

I owned a Cayman (2.7) and yes it was underpowered compared to my new scoob... but hell was it a fantastic all round sports car... and would literally run rings around the scoob handling wize.... so my so, I nearly lost the STI twice after getting into it after the Porker.. the scooby is a quick saloon.. the boxter/cayman are sports cars with mid engined handling.... just a little underpowered in a striaght line drag against most scooby's... but it's not all about 1/4 mile blasting is it.. otherwise we'd all be in big Yank muscle cars that cannot hande anything other than a straight freeway...

Oh and the Porsche badge snaps knicker elastic..the scooby attracts school boys... (That sounds wrong but u know what I mean)

LOL good story OP. These guys need putting in their place every now and then.

Reminds me of the chap in a Toyota Supra (I love these cars by the way) that decided he was going to show me how quick he was going past me on a slip road. It was probably running about 700 bhp as these things normally are, especially the ones like this with the OTT veilside body kit . Anyway, he got along side me, tried to floor it and just fish tailed for a bit as I flew past him.

He didn't look happy as he struggled to keep it on the road.

A bit like scoobs there is quite a range of boxsters, from 2.5 ltr, 2.7 and the 3.2 boxster S.

So depends which one you tangle with, the early boxter 'S' have 240bhp out of the box and the later ones 260bhp out of the box. Allowing for 2wd trans losses and a lightish car. The boxster 'S' should be no slouch.

I fancy an upgrade on my E36 M3 at the moment, and I am seriously tempted by a boxter 'S'. My only dilema is for another 5K I could have a 996 with a GT3 kit fitted.

They are not going to be rocket ship quick, but should give even an STI a good run for its money.
