Tesco need to tell their home delivery packers that you can put more than one thing in each bag .

No wonder they are running our of bags for "foot shoppers" - I've got them all !

Sometimes shortages do happen. We had one, when our delivery went missing, so we offered as many alternatives as possible, at a rather large cost to us. Funnily enough, even when explaining the situation, people still ranted and raved.

On the other point. I am yet to come across a shop round here that won't give out free bags up to now. Yes, they try and sell the others, but I have never been refused a free bag if I have needed one.

No ranting or raving just waited til the guy turned up with more bags. I haven't been asked to pay for any bags yet?????

No drama when they do I'll just send in the Scoobynet mafia to shop and then boycott

Since they are wanting to sell you bags, what would happen if after purchasing your shopping the bags burst and say 3 bottles of wine smash on the floor. Are they liable to replace the shopping as they have sold you a defective bag ???

I suppose that would be down to the managers discretion....if it was a new one then I would replace as a gesture of good will but if it was an old one that would be a bit more difficult to call.

At the end of the day we look at each situation and make a judgement as we see fit......you would be suprised what we are faced with daily where people try to pull the wool over but the more experience you get you can usually make the correct decision.

Well, I'm back after another day dealing with the great unwashed.

We usually replace them. Although you'd be amazed how many blokes will try and cram as many in one bag as possible. I always tell them not to come running to me when the bag splits halfway across the car park.

I got a reply back from Asda and they are very sorry i was treated the way i was and it is their policy to continue to give out free carrier bags whilst actively promoting the governments initiative to reuse

"Although, we are encouraging customers to bring their own bags or buy bags, no customer should be made to feel uncomfortable by this policy."

I think you did.

Most likely scenario is, either the member of staff was having a bad day, was new or misinterpreted the policy. There can always be various reasons. As I said, we don't refuse free bags, but policy can be said to change so often, without clarity to staff, they don't know where they are at. There is of course the head office policy, that due to possible bad communication, or chinese whispers, can very much be misunderstood at a store level. I know it happens.

End of the day, you have had a reply which seems to have made you happier, all is well, I guess.

I refuse to pay for the carrier bag twice as it is built into the cost of the items they sell.

I now dont shop in M&S and if Tesco's tried the charging then i will leave the shopping on the belt in fact i have more than once left a basket on a belt as the the queues were 5 deep as they only had 30% of the tills open and no express tills so i just walk out.

How else do you protest? I take my buisness else where that is my right they can refuse to serve me.

Also it is the stores choice to make the bags from plastic they could make them from some thing else, i also like many other people reuse my carriers and if i do have any left why cant i put it in my council recycling?

I think if we all just carry our shopping out in our arms imagine store security trying to work out who has paid and who hasn't

and what about impulse shopping if you walk to the shop with one or two reuse bags and they have a couple of BOGOF's this policy of trying to force us to reduce bag use will eventually impact on what some people buy, the purpose of giving free bags is to encourage us to make impulse buys as it removes a reason not to get that extra bag of potatoes etc.

and as said above the supermarkets just waste so much energy they obviously have no interest in energy saving it is just PR to justify charging us for some thing that is already covered in the price of our shopping.

Our local Tesco withdrew the free bags that were on the checkouts. The till staff were then asking you how many bags you may need......It didnt last long. The queue's were massive at the checkouts,it just didnt work..

There was also a comment earlier in the thread about how managers can talk down to staff etc..

In the Tesco close to where i work, before christmas i saw a manager talking to a member of staff. He was giving this young lad a proper dressing down, even as customers were walking past. From what i could gather it was about not keeping the tins of cat food stocked at the front of the shelves..

Now this lad was mentaly impaired and was nearly in tears,it was obvious he was humiliated.... I went over to the "manager" and asked him if it was appropriate to be talking to this lad like this, and if this had to be done, surely somewhere more private would be a good idea. He mumbled something about "staff training" and aisle tidyness or something..

I suggested that i would like to humiliate him in front of the customers that had now gathered, and see if it did him any good in "how to deal with people"..
He went red and stormed off..

Supermarket managers...***** the the lot of them. They all seem to be company brainwashed in there George suits, swanning about like there making decisions that matter.

We all know Tesco are the devils work..

Morrisons or local all the way now..

Have you read the thread ? Supermarkets HAVE to reduce bag use its not their choice they have been told by the government either do it, or new laws will be passed to make them do it. What about this do people not understand.

...so maybe the supermarkets should get together and agree (perfectly legally) to refuse to sell any goods to any cabinet member or MP who supports this stupid policy^H^H^H^H^H^Hmandate^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hguideline!!

If the government wants to enforce pathetic rules, then it is about time that the general population fought back.

yes i have read the thread and know that the supermarkets have helped create this fuss about nothing.

My local Tesco's has been a trial story for removing the free bags and we have had various methods but every time we get busy like christmas they just have to put the bags back now we just get handfulls stuffed down the bottom of the till but "offically" they issue them 1 at a time so dont tell any boady from head office.

If you point out the bags lying all round the tills to a manager they rush along the tills telling off the checkout staff and making them put them back out of the customers reach until the manager disappears then they all get put back out for the customers to help themselves.

My Tesco's has had the bag racks removed so they cant hang them up so instead of opening as you pull them off the dispenser you waste time trying to open each bag.

The supermarkets have decided what to make the bags out of and have created this "problem" about the bags and instead of changing the bags we all must now pay extra money to the supermarkets or help reduce their over heads i dont see how the supermarkets are being forced into a situation they dont want??

Stores, not just supermarkets are being 'forced' into this by the governments' green attempts. As has been said, it is little to do with cutting costs, and more to do with complying with what they are being told to do. I do believe at our store, we make some money from selling the reusable bags, or save on not supplying the free ones, but believe it or not, that is not the main motivation.

This is not too disimilar to stores reducing the wattage of bulbs they sell. It certainly isn't in the best interest of the store to do it, from my experience, but again it is pressure from above. Slightly off topic, but to some extent relevant.

How? I have a family of 5 (6 on a fortnight) and i'd be hard pushed to feed them for a week for less than £120 a week. If I have the time and shop at an independant butchers & green grocer etc - i can spend about £50 on meat then £15 on fruit & veg and then still have to spend about £60 in tesco for tins and nappies etc etc. would LOVE to see your receipt to see where i'm going wrong

As for carrier bags - i bought mine in TESCO ages ago so just use them - however, i went into tesco cafe the other day for brekie and they are now charging 15p for a little tub of butter - and i think that is terrible.
