So the government told the supermarkets to reduce plastic bag use the supermarkets said 'we do not want to really but we will think about it' The government then said either voluntarily reduce bag use or we will set loads of limits and taxes on bag use and give you thousands of hours of paper work to do to prove you are meeting plastic bag reduction targets. The supermarkets then said 'OK we will'. The public then throws a big strop because they have to pay .05 pence for a bag and blames someone working on the checkout ? Why ? How can people be so ignorant about this coming up on the horizon given that it has been splashed around the media for over a year that the plastic bag reduction targets were coming ? Are people really so clueless about the way a big company is run that they honestly believe the supermarkets want to charge for bags or wanted to change ? Try and change policy in a company the size of asda, see how much it costs and how many problems it causes and then tell me that they are doing it for the sake of 'profit' on carrier bags. Some of you are so thick it defies belief.

Tell me what i'm missing, come on.

sorry mate, cant remember me saying I laughed @ there effort!! & for comments I dont thur them into the landfills too! I fill them up with things to thurow away/use the bag as my bedroom bin! & for my disabled father wasnt a excuse nor wanting them to see me & feel sorry for us, Its at the fact da Asda that I went to wasnt a local one & the one that I do go to dont do none of that bulloux with trying to charge you 5p they bloody giv u the bag 4 free!!! Now my point is its not easy shopping, taking care of a elder person, making sure no one get's hurt by the wheel chair, carrying the goods, checking if you've been charged right on you bill on the way out of checkouts, going around looking for a spear bag, putting your father into the car first ?!?!? or leaving your goods all around your car in the car park floor like ******* waiting for a mug to take your goods & run off... the list go's on dude!! A fukin bag wud be nice after all that, im paying for goods so bottom line is if I dont get a bag *** you too! its as simple as that!

I'm not having a pop at ya, im trying to make you understand the situation, its not like Asda is closing down they make sh*t loads of money

And all *i'm* saying is that once you've bought a bag, even one that doesn't cost a whole British pound, you never have to do it again, hell your Dad could even keep hold of them to make him feel more involved perhaps? I just do not see why there is SUCH resistance to weening ourselves off free plastic bags in this country. Christ no wonder we're no longer "Great" Britain...

As a nation we will accept diplomatic and trade links with child murderers in Israel, we will allow ourselves to be associated with the Ecomonic war in Iraq, and we will give up our right to chose the destiny of our own country to Europe without a noise being made but take away our free plastic bags and it really hits the fan. I suggest a protest in the streets followed by a national strike to get our free placcy bags back.

Why not just eat or use what you need at the point where the goods are shelved. Voila! no carrier bag requirements and no carrier bag arguments.

It's a real pi$$er though when the bog roll is on the top shelf!

Thats genuinely funny.
I actually think what is genuinely funny is the fact that you dont have a clue. Yes retailers make profit but, if you read what I posted, I said we (can only comment for asda) put back most of the 'net' profit into price investment (hence the massive ad campaigns at the moment against Tesco). Lets imagine for a second if you made X amount of customers happy (cos thats what its all about) then they will spend in the shop and tell their friends and family what great value it was, you will make Y profit. Infact the more profit we make the more we invest in price......so in effect the bigger reduction in carrier bags we see the cheaper good become for the customer at the same time as helping the environment which pleases the government so we dont get a fine that YOU would have to pay for.

The most important thing about this is not profit its the customer, profit is important but only so money can be invested in the prices for the customers.

Sunk in yet??

Thanks for the patronising explanation, but you say it yourself - its all for profit.
More customers, more investment, lower prices, more customers, more profit, more investment...its a never ending cycle, the sole aim of which is to make as much money as possible.
EVERYTHING a supermarket does is done with the intetion of making profit. If it ticks a few "green" boxes along the way, all the better.

If a supermarket wants to make more profit by dropping prices thats fine by me,
what exactly do you want them to do ? Give stuff away fro free ? Have you actually understood that they had no choice about the carrier bags ?

I don't mind paying for a carrier bag if I really have to and really need one but if free ones are there then I'll have a free one.

I went into Wilkinsons one day, only bought a few toiletries, got to the till and the woman said 'would you like a carrier bag for 10p?' My reply was 'do you have any cheaper ones?' Then she pulled out a free one anyways!!! Was that to waste my time, hers or to get more money for the store because I don't know where all the money goes for carrier bags that you are charged for.

a couple of 5pence bags and you left your shopping, putting another hour of your time to go somewhere else to save a few pence. Jeez, you must really value your own personal time

Yes, I am aware they had no choice, and have never said anything about that, my point has been that they claim they are doing it to save the environment, which has nothing to do with the real reasons - ie being told to by the governmnet and making more money as a consequence. As my first post said - if they were genuoinely interested in environmental issues, there are a lot of other things they should be changing.

And as I explained the carrier bags is merely scratching the surface of what is being done....reducing utilities by having more efficient fridges/freezers, more efficient lamps and reducing to 30% lighting out of hours, waste initiatives which reduces the amount of products we throw away, having motion sensors to switch lights on and off in back-up areas etc and none of which are forced government initiatives these are to reduce costs to ensure better prices for our customer.

Excellent. Get a grip on your self-organisation and use it as an opportunity to stop wasting bag after bag after bag, week after week after week. In fact why not write them a thank you note, they'd probably appreciate it in amongst all the kneejerk formal complaints they must be getting...

I can answer this one. The cashiers are made to ask if you would like a reusable bag, along with countless other things they have decided to introduce. Btw, every cashier hates doing it, makes their opinion clear to the powers that be, but it is company policy, so has to be followed. Spot checks are now carried out, where customers are asked if they were offered all these things, and believe me, if a cashier is caught out, they would not hesitate to hand out warnings.

As for the carrier bags, we are not allowed to refuse the free ones, and don't, we are just told to offer alternatives first, or ask if they need one. It is actually amazing since they are no longer on show, when you ask, how many people actually say they don't need one, who most likely would have taken them before, and how people tend to use less, while we don't restrict how many they can have. I had a woman before this was introduced who bought four items, and used a bag for each.

Oh, and while I'm on, I am not going to explain my personal circumstances, my exact job and why I am still there, but I am not stupid, I didn't do too badly at school or university, but if it makes some people feel superior to belittle those in a lesser job, then feel free.

Unfortunately there are people out there that feel better about themselves when they belittle others that may not have as much income or status.

It's a sad world. I could never bring myself to behave that way, even as a faceless internet user, but certainly not in 'real' life.

What people seem to forget at times, is regardless of the reasons for people being in certain jobs, they are jobs that need to be done. Shelves need to be stacked, cashiers are needed to take pay etc etc. I don't think it is too much to ask for a little common decency to be shown towards people who are providing a service to them (most of the time).

I know we are getting a little off topic but this subject does annoy me somewhat. I started as a trolley boy whilst at college and Uni, the way we used to get treated by customers and sometimes managers is a disgrace. I suppose that was one of the reasons I wanted to work my way up.....years later one or two of the managers that treated me so badly worked for me and although I never treated them the way they treated me it was quite pleasing.

Asda's green 5p bags are absolute shite, total utter waste of money.

The best ones are the 35p blue sturdy bags from Tesco. Can fit loads of shopping in them.

When I remember to take them that is. Got them out the cupboard on Sunday, put them on the back seat of the car. Got to Asda, went to lock the car and Lisa(her above) had to remind me to get them.

We are working on making the 5p ones better...however if you do have problems with them take them back cos they are a bag for life and are replaced whenever they split etc

I always forget mine aswell.

Tesco round my bit are free

We have loads of them and when we remember to take them we do. I have noticed that the bags are not as readily available in the self service checkouts now, just thought there was a shortage lol.
