I'm looking for a slightly newer 2nd car (got a Mk 2 Golf GTi at the mo). Think one of these may suit all my needs.
Anyone give me a few pointers what I should be looking out for.

Problems with central locking (replacement connection from door to shell, about 145 quid each side), air con issues (it needs regassing) try anything upto 600 quid, pipes have a tendancy to rot due to where they are, people try just to fob you off with the regas story.
Rear beams, if the car has had a hard life, you could be looking at a replacement rear beam, about 400 quid fitted.
Clutches, 400+ fitted, electrics (its a french car), heater matrix, head gaskets, cambelts (36k miles or 3 years, not 72k miles as some would indicate to you!).
Crash damage, radiators are a bit crap and can collapse, engine temps (no higher than 100 deg on standing) engine fans, regular servicing is necessary, horrid turning circle due to 6 speed gearbox (you sort of get use to it in car parks....)
Look for wear on the wishbones, bushes on high mileage cars, wheel bearings, badly lowered examples (most people do it completely wrong....) smooth 6 speed gearbox (not hard to change gears), auto wipers work (newer phase 2 models) you just need a bottle of water to test that
Watch out for issues with the power steering, its pretty rare but damned expensive to fix (peugeot quote 900 quid for a new rack!)
Hope that helps a little

Have to say thats another great thing about this car - The sound is entoxicating, with a real raspy roar without being over the top, you can't help but want more from the exhaust note. Mines not as loud as the one in the clip but similar noise, and if my car was stripped with no carpet or door linnings etc it would probably sound very close.
Mines is still running a cat as well. The owners club reckon there is little or no gain from removing other than more noise.
With regards to running costs, as with all old cars with a few miles you need to buy with your eyes open and helps to be a little hands on mechanically if you unlucy enough for something to fail.
Every thing works on my car, and nothing is making funny noises or falling off. If something breaks, there are lots of spare parts for these on eurocar parts or from specliast breakers.
Prior to my GTI6 I had a XSI 16v I bought for a RAF Marham track day. Thrashed it all day long and drove it with a mind I wasn't expecting to drive it home, but from 9am to 5pm is was constantly abused and redlined in every gear and just took it. And then took me back home 150 miles.
If anything really major goes then I just bung it on Ebay for spares or repairs and recover close to what I paid for it anyway - So as well as being a cracking little car, if I get 1-2 months trouble free use from it, it will be free fun motoring for me thereafter.
I think someone mentioned it another post bangermotoring

Rallye was cheaper when new (less toys so lighter too) so if you can find one it should cost less. I had the yellow GTI6 back in late 90s ... loved it

love the 106 gti hate the driving position if you have anything bigger than a size 5 shoe, forget about the 106, the one thing with the 306 is that it has a much nicer driving position

I've had a look at various websites, it does seem that most of the cars on there have got air con problems.

That's interesting. I had some baseball cap wearing, live-at-home-with-the-parents-coz-I-spend-all-me-money-in-Halfrauds lad giving his car beans behind me a couple of days back. Remember commenting to the missus that I couldn't believe just how close to my tail he'd kept (i did lose him in the end of course ). Reckon his was a Gti6. I know what I'd buy if i had to lose the Scoob. Gti6 is good, but 205 gti with Mi16 conversion would be the way for me.

I'm being a bit 5th gear here, rather than top gear.. But the 306 seats 5 in relative comfort and has a decent boot as well. So doubles up nicely as the tip run car
Don't get me wrong its not a scoob, but for a normally asiprated car, that offers thrills, fun, performance and practicality I don't think there is much out there that can touch it for the money.
