Default 306-GTI6 cracking little car.

Thought I had tried most cars, and I'm currently in between cars so bought what to me is a cheap stop gap car. And picked up a 306 GTI-6 and haven't stopped grinning since I got it.

Have had most top jap machinery and a few german, some with big power. But have to say IMO these cars are little gems and huge value for money.

167bhp normally aspirated out of the box with a 6 speed gearbox.

The one I have has been lowered and in the dry handles like its on rails, its loves to rev and responsive low down with a second kick above 5.5K all the way to 7K revs.

Its so refeshing to have a car with no turbo lag, that you can thrash and rev hard without being a licence looser. Its got a lovely raspy exhaust which is really adictive.

I've forgot what fun you can have for sod all money, and there is allot to be said for having a car I couldn't give a stuff about if I pick up a door ding, scuff, or for that matter wouldn't get that upset if the engine blew tomorrow.

This was supposed to be a stop gap, but if it looks after me I can see me keeping this for a little while or at the very least keeping this as a second/third car and getting an elise or something for when the sun is shinning.

I'm thinking about one of these for some track days. I had a 1.9 205 mi16 a couple of years ago, but they're too old TBH.

What did you pay, under a grand?

I bought Wifey one a couple of years ago - posted on here and got laughed out of the door!!!

I picked it up from Blackburn, drove it back down the M6, got to the A49, and drove the next 100-odd miles with a smile like I had a coat-hanger trapped in my mouth!!

FANTASTIC car.

Mine/Wifey's is a Phase 1 white GTi6. Totally standard The car has lost virtually NO money in 18 months

Now got 130K odd and still drives like a dream. Had the head rebuilt/bored last year after a head gasket failure (watch out for these) - brilliant car.

Put my modded Scooby to shame for thrills/fun (Go-Kart handling) and is MUCH more fun than my S4 now.

So, to summarise, I concur with your findings!!

Mine will be up for sale in the new year only issue with her (that wont be sorted out) is laqueur peel on the roof and a little on the rear drivers side wing but fsh and lots of parts replaced (plus the aircon works, none of this "it needs regassing" lark ) as it has been overhauled and had most of the bits replaced!
Great car though only selling because i have another scoob on the way

Just watch the lowered ones, if its not been done right it can cause excessive wear on the rear beam though they handle very well without having to lower them

Cracking car and one that I still miss... really fluid chassis and buzzy engine coupled to the 6 speed box means they're not far off the pace of a stock WRX.

Torque figure on the engine is quite high for a normally aspirated engine if I remember correctly.

Nice looking car too and probably the last decent Peugeot before they got all lardy and safety conscious.

Only had mine a few months but wish I'd kept it longer...

Only issue I had with the car when I got it was a blowing exhaust, and sorted that with a second hand s/steel back box, and a dodgy idle. Which was sorted with a new stepper motor from Ebay.

I done a track day a marham earlier this year and bought a 306 2.0 16V XSI for the event which really was huge fun on the track and wasn't shammed by machinery with twice and more BHP. The clio 172 sports were just pipping me down the straights, so can't wait to try the gti-6 on the same event and see how it compares. It feels much quicker than much XSI at the time.

In a bizzare way I'm having as much fun in this as the STI8 I just sold.

Amazing the fun you can have for around a grand. Further more I will service this car myself, petrol is good compared to a scoob, and will save myself a fortune on running costs as well.

I almost got the bug enough to the the more exclusive Rallye at some point which are still comparatively cheap as chips for a limited edition production run car.

Whats impressed me about them is the level of mods that come as standard and IMO they are a bit like civic CRX's they are as good as they get.

These cars come with high lift cams, ported heads, 4 branch tubular manifold, sports exhaust, cold air induction, and more all as standard.

I think Peugeot have made some cracking cars.

I've owned a 205 1.6 GTI, a stripped out 205 Mi16 and a 106 GTI. All of them great fun and can keep up with a lot more exotic machinery.

Difficult to say at the moment, as havn't really had it long enough to tell. But a tank of juice has lasted me almost twice as long as the STI8 - Not very scientific, but chucked £40 in it last night so will keep an eye on the miles.

most of my driving if not all are short journeys and urban driving.

Wifey seems to get roughly 28ish out of hers (driven like it was intended!!)

I can't tell for sure as she NEVER resets the trip properly and fuels as and when she remembers!!!LOL!!

Lots of footage of these things on track days doing all sorts of damage to top machinery. But found this on Youtube and a really nice watch of what a gti6 can do behind the wheels of someone with some ability.

I've had up to 37mpg on a long steady motorway run, so you can get decent mpg if you try

however, in reality I averaged upper 20's most of the time with mixed driving, could get 30 if I wanted quite easily, on the flip side you could get it down to teens if you try!

Yeah but lets be fair that Z3M in the same hands would have also been a lot faster.

Possibly but not sure TBH, the Z3M was pulling him on the straights, but could see Z3M twitching around all over the place on the corners whereas the 306 just dug in. But have to admit it looks like the 306 might have a stripped interior and has signs of a roll cage. So yeah not the fairest of comparisions.

The Z3M are mates of his I think so I'm guessing they have both put in allot of time at the ring . There is an equally impresive/good watch with the same guy tailing the M5 ring taxi, the Z3M and a porker. And again although the ring taxi, porker and Z3M were pulling on the straights which is hardly suprsing, he was right back on them and all over them when he got to the corners.

But do take your point - That german bird from top gear would almost certainly get round the ring quicker in that bedford than i would in my GTI6 so its very much about who's behind the wheel and not just the car.
