Lou - wrap them then and avoid hurting your hands (I've hurt mine plenty of times).
I'm just from a cro magnon school of martial arts and exercise/fitness- it sometimes hurts but that's part of it. Especially when a spinning hook kick catches you in the temple (DOH DOH DOH!!) and knocks you out cold. And when you get major concussion half an hour after a competition. And busted ribs, nose, etc, etc.
And when I managed to get new students to throw up when I took the circuits part of the lessons...

Matteeboy, I personally think your style of training is very old fashioned and counter-productive. What's the point in getting a preventable injury when boxing etc is such a tough sport anyway? Don't tell me, you have ingested your ********* due to not wearing groin protection, it's for girls.
