Project P1 600bhp +
PROJECT UPDATE
A big chunk of the modification work has now been completed by RCM.
From the initial 310bhp when I purchased the car, then Matt got to work on a major engine rebuild that was restricted to 400ish until the brakes, suspension, gearbox & clutch were upgraded.
We are not sure of the exact power at the moment but it would be much nearer 500 than 600 at present. A dyno will be done in the near future, but as I am quickly learning from many guys, bhp is not a major factor.
Whilst speaking Matt & Dave Rowe (Motec) at Silverstone they both advised me that there is a lot more power if required
, regarding several routes.
I realise that this thread is read by many, ranging from the Pro's, to a few other guys with insane modifications, and to many who have started to mod or thinking of doing so.
It proves good when you gradually modify, as you learn the power increases well. Having always used it as my own car (not locked away for events), this is what I found with the power increases in my classic Impreza (as a road car).
300bhp
Good fun, and you realise that you have some power.
Braking distances seem normal, and traction not a problem.
Fuel economy good, handling impressive.
400bhp
I did not know what to expect regarding power difference and the first time I drove it off boost the power delivery was slightly quicker. The first time I used boost I noticed a huge difference. You remain pinned for longer.
Braking distances became much shorter, and the gap in front to the next car needed to be a lot longer before giving it some.
Traction in dry really good, but in the wet had traction lose in 2nd,3rd & 4th gears (in a straight line) when boosting up.
Fuel economy still very good. Not a huge difference from 300.
400bhp with modified brakes / suspension
AP Racing & EXE-TC turned the car into a dream to drive.
500+bhp
The difference between 300 & 400 is huge but nothing to this.
When you have "a genuine" 500+ in a Classic Impreza, its mayhem.
Off boost is fantastically smooth & easy to drive. Off boost performance seems the same as 400. The triple plate clutch takes a bit of getting use to.
The first thing I noticed was how different it sounded. From the noisy dump valve to a noisy waste gate chatter. Car is much louder too (one silencer).
At 4000rpm you are pinned from 2nd to 6th, really pinned. All I ever see the passenger do out the corner of my eye is try to nut the dash 5 times. It would prove similar to having a large pigeon as a passenger.
The acceleration in 3rd,4th,5th & 6th is truly amazing.
The braking distances are dramatically increased and you now need an empty road opposed to traffic up ahead. Fuel economy is amazingly high off boost. Track days will be around 3 Ltrs per minute !
Olly, Matt, Dave Rowe, Madhammer & MartiP1 all told me your driving styles need to change and that sums it up.
At 500bhp you fully realise it's brutal and respect jumps in.
At this point you wonder what The Gobstopper or Zen's car must be like to drive

Now that most of the mechanical upgrades are complete here is the complete and revised list of all modifications carried out by Roger Clark Motorsport.
I have not included all the minor bits & pieces.

To achieve 600bhp now is the easy bit.
A larger turbo, NOS and r/fuel or additives will sort that out, along with a few relating modifications.
For now, I am going to learn the car.
The more I drive it the more I realise how mad it is (as my road car), and what a fantastic job RCM have done.
I have not driven it in competition yet, but will be throughout the summer.
Come winter

That’s one hell of a spec sheet, amazing looking car and the fine detail and finish when I saw it up close was amazing and that was some way off its current state. Great write up as always, keep us posted on developments. Nice photo by the way

At 500bhp you fully realize it's brutal and respect jumps in.
At this point you wonder what The Gobstopper must be like to drive in.
Hope to find out soon.
You will find that you have adapted and changed your driving skills in a very short time.
You have a very nicely balanced and user friendly car Clive and you might find that the next jump up detracts in it's behavioral manor. And it will bit and bit HARD.

Just needs a real clean now.
Dazzler is the man for that. He will do his magic on the polish etc (wait until you see the before & after pix) This guy's meaning of "shine" is on another level.
This guy washes, styles and blow dries his foot mats
seriously !

Your right mate. Track days etc are smooth. Bumpy lanes and B roads are another ball game at this power.
I find myself looking at the road surface every time prior to booting it.
It snatched away twice in a straight line over bumps, and twice on a bend, all four times on boost, and it happens very quickly.
At 400 you could feel it begin to happen. At 500 your don' get any prior warnings.
Looking back on it 400bhp would have been the border line for road use. Lovely to drive, smooth and a perfect balance.
500+ on boost is a friggin party, and for the first time you realise it's now dangerous and the words "right off" crop up every now & again.
Hi all.
this my 1st post joined last night great site been reading lost of things on here for a few months on page 29 of 60 p1 600. I.E Skullfudge got STI Type R v4 it is pushing 375bhp scooby shoot out last year best time of the day was a dead 12.00 car number 33.
Stop polishing it and do something with it mad hammer would beat you in reverse if he had 4 gears Lol. Sweet car though but it appears him with the best toys dusnt always win

Give me a chance, only had it back for one week. Things will change

We'll see chap
You will need those winter changes first me thinks. Things never stand still though, I have a couple of plans brewing for 600+ for my car
Been away most of this week so missed the updates on here, seems Skull think this is his thread again with all these posts
Nice pics from the 'Pod day' looking fiorward to the next one.

Fai17 is fitting the TO4z turbo, and it made 680bhp on an evo I was in
I could do with those injectors in now, but I have been told I need more fuel pumps and a swirl pot. Hoping to have it done sometime this month??

"Them" being the crucial part? There is no point in buying another fuel pump in the hope it will do when going twin/3 definately will do
Congrats on your TOTB place mate !
