hi mate,

if im not mistaken you started this thread stating this was a rebuild to a budget due to your pending new arrival (i.e. baby)...and fair play for all the pics and step by step guidance..but what happened to the budget..

i have a rebuild delema im debating with myself everyday...MONEY / SHORT SUPPLY/ QUALITY PARTS/ MORE MONEY/ AND MORE PARTS and so on it goes

BUDGET?? so what was your BUDGET to start with? coz i cant see one! i know u intend to recoup the money selling part off the old engine/turbo etc, etc. but even still this rebuild is starting to spiral..

you had to get a 6 speed Gearbox coz the old wont take the power of the new engine and mods..OK fair enough..

then are you going for a Simtec remap etc?

so tell me honestly when its all done Total cost from start to finish on all New parts/mod and little excessories..(forget the selling of parts, old engine) minus of course labour (your working for free, hardly charging yourself)

just want to see wat kinda Budget your working to...im not knocking you Build or Thread because its excellent stuff and fair play to u..we taking £5K here

ALL the Breast with the build mate

Wayno

the budget went out the window straight away as i had a bit of money when i was made redundant so thought i would get some of the more expensive items like pistons/rods 6 speed box and so on out the way.

as the build is going on i fined myself adding new parts like idler pulleys / gaskets/ mounts ect...which i did not account on doing but as the old parts seem worn and my car had done 79 thousand miles i might as well re-new them now while everything is pulled apart or i will fined a few months down the line will be pulling it apart again .

will be running my power fc for now unless some bargain etc.. comes up

think it's over 5 k already without all the other things i need to get , so i would say all in all it will come in between £7500 - 8500 or there abouts but will tot it up when all is done
put it this way i won't be doing it again.

once car is done and all my bits and bobs i want

Hope I don't have to add to many new parts on mine when it "goes in" for the special service in one weekend's time!

Hi Lee, nice project thread.

I'd consider your options with regards to the sump you're planning to use. I bought the same one you have and sent it back because i was apaulled at the standard of 'craftsmanship'... to me it looked worse than something a thirteen year-old would stick together in metal work.

See this 22b.com thread for more details and opinions other than my own.

The one John Flestead supplies is considerably better crafted and thought-out than the eBay one. Well worth the extra £100.

This is only my opinion, feel free to ignore it. It just seems a shame to spoil what looks like a good project wth a ****-poor effort at a baffled sump.

i am not going in to competitions or events with my car and yes the one you had made is better crafted than the one i have but at alot more cash too so i would expect the sump you have to be better. and i got it from Rowley's performance web site

if i was doing events ect... then i would go as far as the sump you have but see no point to be honest and I'm trying to keep the cost down as i have been out of work since October and now my other half has lost her job to and we have a 4 month old baby so moneys tight mate

This is only my opinion, feel free to ignore it. It just seems a shame to spoil what looks like a good project Th a ****-poor effort at a baffled sump. :
i think it is good enough to do the job i want at a price i can afford as if i was made of money i would have the best that money can buy

as said in in a post before i did go and inquire about the one you have but it was to much money for me as i still have so much still to get for my project and at this climate i can't see me getting a job yet so money is very tight now and i have only my hobbles and old parts to fund my project

managed to fit my md321s turbo last night but it was abit of a mission as it was so big
thought my 20g was big but wow i had to grined parts of the block and cut bracket down to fit it
all fitted now made a start on the manifold too and got the hi flow rails on and some fixings just need to cut my braided fuel line and can get that on in the reverse position

Hi Lee, nice edit. Please don't take my comments the wrong way, they were directed at Rowleys, not you.

I understand RE competition events etc and am sorry to hear you're out of work. I'm not made of money either, if i was i wouldn't be driving an Impreza and if was driving one it would have a Lateral ally sump fitted.

I just wanted to highlight the issue to make sure you were aware of it and had considerately thought everything through, which obviously you have.

To explain the eBay reference, Rowleys (at least used to) flog their sump on eBay but the picture showed a sump fitted with an aluminium baffle-tray installed. Their website was the same the last time i checked. To be fair the guys there were good to deal with when it came to the refund etc.

Ok, back on topic please.

some pic's

old diff is the smaller looking of the two

prop off and pic to show the difference which is the 6 speed is smaller in length but bigger in diamitor

then it was on to the front and took of the cusco h brase and lower arms as i have alloy arms to go back on

then it was to drop the box with jacks underneath and then pull it from underneath as the car was high enough to pull it out

then took off the support cradle from the 5 speed and cleaned then replaced the old bushes with whiteline uprated ones as these are often overlooked

pic of the two boxes side by side and as you can guess the bigger one's the 6 speed

after i bought the five speed i thought it was out of a 2001-2002 car but it never had stub axles in so i thought that the person i bought it off just pulled the shaft out with out removing the pin on the driveshaft cup but after speaking through email to the guy i had bought the box off he said they were part of the driveshaft and he had them but wanted alot of money for the shafts plus they might not fit the classic hub

so got in touch with cotton competiton and posted them some pics of the box as i was told by some people that i could use the stubs that are used in a 2001-2002 six speed and my shafts will fit all i need to do then is change the seals aswell the guys at cotton comp said that the seals that are used in the box i have are 04 plus so it was a newer box than i thought so ordered the stubs/seals and clips and they were just the job so big thanks to cotton comp and richard who sorted it all out for me

then it was to fit my group n gearbox mount

then fitted linkage which i forgot to take a pic

then it was to get the 6 speed in took a bit of effort but we got it in

all thats left now is to put prop and diff on and alloy arms and then give it all a good clean
