It's a bit odd that the Gear 300 would lead to stiff changes when cold, it's at the thin end of the scale for a 75w-90 when cold, so you'd think it would make cold shifts better (as it does for many people). If you want to go for a Shockproof oil, you want the Lightweight (as per the link). The 90PA is ideal for the diff.

A few guys on our group have actually since said they had the same issue and switched to Millers which cured the problem.
I'm not massively keen on shockproof given my gearbox doesn't crunch and they don't recommend it themselves for our cars (except for their standard stuff) so will probably give that a try.

Hi, I'm about to buy oil for my 2004 WRX PPP and my 1984 Subaru Leone. I will definitely stick with Millers CFS 5w-40 for the WRX (suprisingly with CFS NT my car burned a bit of oil, about a liter every 5000km, while oil consumption went back to zero with regular CFS).
For the Subaru Leone I normally use Castrol Magnatec 10w-40 and was thinking about buying Millers CFS 10w-40 instead.
On one side I'd like the car to be as protected as possible to keep it alive and kicking for many years to come, on the other hand since it never had problems with the Magnatec I'm not 100% convinced to change something that worked till now.
Do you recommend the change from Magnatec to CFS or is it overkill for the 80s Leone? Is it even good to use a fully synthetic oil on such an old and unsophisticated engine as the EA81, probably designed for mineral oil? I'm concerned the oil could be "too good", remove deposits from over 30 years of usage and increase oil consumption or create other problems.
In general what kind of oil do you recommend for a classic car where longevity is more important than pure performance or fuel consumption?
As you've been using the Magnatec, which is okay stuff, there shouldn't be much muck in the engine, so there should be no issue at all in going form the Magnatec to CFS. If you want the best for it, then it is a proper performance oil, like the CFS. Performance oils are aimed at protection, rather than emissions/longevity, like a lot of modern oils.
Hi Oilman,what would you recommend for my 2010 Impreza Sti with ppp fitted and de-cat.Its putting out 350 bhp.
My servicing garage uses Casrtol edge 0w 40 but car seems to drink a lot about 1 litre per 900 miles.Should I increase the viscosity ?
Car gets hard road use.

I recently ordered some Motul Inugel Expert after seeing you recommend it to a Classic owner but after reading a little more, it seems that the Expert contains silicates which shouldn't be used in a Subaru engine.
I have an 02 WRX, is the Expert suitable or should I use the Inugel Optimal instead?
Like I said, I've already ordered the coolant and am ready to change, but don't want to use it if it's going to cause harm.

You need a 75w-90 GL5 oil for the gearbox and diff.
The Millers CRX NT, Motul Gear 300, Red Line 75w-90NS and Gulf Competition are ideal as top end options. The Millers TRX Synthetic/EE Nanodrive, Mobil SHC, Castrol Syntrax Universal Plus and Valvoline Synpower TDL are good, but a step down from the top oils. Fuchs Gear Syn, Motul Motylgear, Millers TRX Semi and Castrol Universal are good, cheaper options.
Either of the oils is absolutely fine for for the engine, they are both very good.
Using a fuel system cleaner every now and again is a good idea, helps to keep the system clean. I think it's BP that are advertising their fuel with fuel system cleaner on TV at the moment.

Wanted to know the capacity for each thing like what is the capacity for the Engine, Gearbox and Rear Dif and what oils to use etc.
Its abit stiff going into third sometimes... Specially under hard acceleration, does this means it needs a oil change badly? Its a stage 2 exedy clutch and only done 10k so can't be the clutch..

You need 5L for the engine, 3.5L for the gearbox and 0.8L for the diff.
