Hi

I'd assume that the oil isn't going to get too hot, so a 10w-40 would probably be fine. The thinner oil might help with the noise as it will flow faster, but it might also lead to more noise as it's thinner - difficult to say until you try it. It might also burn quite a lot of oil with a 10w-40. If that's the case, go back to a 10w-50. CFS 10w-40 is one of the best 10w-40s on the market.

Cheers

What oil would you recommend for a forged 2.0ltr engine running approx. 400bhp?

I am finding 5w40 is a bit thin as I have cosworth pistons so I think there is more clearance, and hence a bit slappy with the thinner oil

Would a 10w60 help?

Hi

I would use a 10w-50 as it will flow better than a 10w-60.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-659-10w-50.aspx

The Nanodrive CFS is, on paper, the best oil available, but the Pro S, Red Line and CFS are really good oils, so all are good choices for your car.

Cheers

Mine had Millers in it before I changed it, although I can't remember which one exactly. Been a while since I've looked at the paperwork.

The synchro crunch has well and truly gone since filling with Redline. Not that I drive the car particularly hard, but it's nice to be able to not have to worry about it.

Hi

A 5w-40 is ideal.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT, Motul Sport/300V, Red Line and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XF Longlife, Fuchs GT1 XTL/Supersyn, Gulf Formula G/ULE, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

Cheers

I would say a good 5w-40 would probably be the way to go, unless you are getting high (over 125C) oil temps, then a 10w-50 is the best choice.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-659-10w-50.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS Nanodrive, Motul Sport/300V, Redline and Gulf Competition.

Cheers

Hi Tim ....

So 5w 40, I'm hitting 95c mainly..... Just to confirm it is a fully synthetic oil I need ?

Also how many litres are required, would like alittle bit left over to top up as required would 6 be enough ?? Think I bought on 5 ltr and one 1 ltr last time but cannot be sure..

Hi

Yes, you want a synthetic.

It takes just under 5L, so 6 is ideal if you want a top up.

Hi Tim

engine oil advice for a forged 2.5 550bhp on meth, spirited use, has oil cooler so oil shouldn't reach soring temps, engine done 8k since rebuild.

thanks

Dan

I think I replied to you on another thread somewhere, but a 5w-40 or 10w-40 should be ideal.

Hi Tim

I have a 03 UK STI with 49000 miles on the clock.

It has a sports cat 3" down pipe, full 3" exhaust, ngk PFR7B Spark plugs, Panel filter, aluminium Radiator, and a remap running approx 330 BHP.

Its was used daily but now being used as a wknd car spirited driving.

I have been using 5-40 fully but do you think maybe 10-40 or 10-50.

Thanks Duncan

Hi

I'd stick with 5w-40, but a good one, like Fuchs Pro S, Millers CFS, Red Line, Gulf Competition or Motul 300V/Sport.

Hi oilman,

Ive got a my99 uk2000, 286bhp - decat, remap 1.5bar boost. I use it as a daily driver. Thinking of going for a 10w 40. Would this be ok? Will millers xfe be ok? or should i go for a race grade?

Thanks Stuart

Hi Stuart

Millers XFE will be fine for that. A synthetic 10w-40 would be better, but a semi is fine as a basic option.

Hi Greg

10w-40 is okay, but a 5w-40 will give better cold start protection.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT, Motul Sport/300V, Red Line and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XF Longlife, Fuchs GT1 XTL/Supersyn, Gulf Formula G/ULE, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

Hi oilman.

I know this isn't oil...

But do you sell coolant concentrate (so as to mix with water), which is perfectly safe to use in the GC8's EJ flat-4?

I know you do Fuchs Pro Cool, but that's pre-diluted, and would work out quite expensive, as result.

BTW, what's the GC8's coolant system's capacity... Is it around 7 litres?

Hi

Yes, it takes 7L according to my data.

If you want a performance coolant, the Pro Cool is one of the best, but you're right, it's not cheap. We have concentrates (like the Fuchs ESK, Millers Alpine Blue, Castrol Radicool or Gulf) but they are 'normal' rather than performance ones. You could use one of those and then add some Motul MoCool, Red Line Waterwetter or Millers Extra Cool as they let the water flow faster, helping it too cool more effectively.

Cheers oilman.

I guess, seeing as coolant changes are only every 2 years, then the extra cost of Pro Cool isn't really too much of a cross to bear, so to speak. (But everyone has their budgets ).

Hi Jake

I would use a really good 5w-40 synthetic.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT, Motul Sport/300V, Red Line and Gulf Competition.

Hi, it's nearly time for me to change the gearbox and rear diff oil in my 2005 STI widetrack again. The car runs circa 430bhp on pump fuel, very occassionally (read - maybe 3 times a year!) run on a meth map at 470.
For bolt and braces I'm tempted to go with Redline Shockproof in the gearbox as I found the Motul Gear 300 that went in on the last change made the first 2 or 3 gear changes a bit stiff when cold in winter months.
For the rear diff I have some Motul 90PA Extreme Pressure.

Which Shockproof do I want though, is it this one?

Hi

It's a bit odd that the Gear 300 would lead to stiff changes when cold, it's at the thin end of the scale for a 75w-90 when cold, so you'd think it would make cold shifts better (as it does for many people). If you want to go for a Shockproof oil, you want the Lightweight (as per the link). The 90PA is ideal for the diff.

Cheers

Tim
