Oil Advice and Recomendations here

I get asked many questions about oil so I thought a thread here for all oil related questions would be a good idea and build into a FAQ or reference point for others.

So, put your oil questions here but please give the following information if you would like a recommendation:

Make
Model
Year
Engine size/type

Any mods

Type of use (road/track)

Additional info (max oil temps, current oil used)

What do you want a recommendation for? Engine, Gearbox etc?

I hope this will help and become a useful thread

Regards
Guy

i have a Q for you oilman, i recently bought Motul 300V 15w50 off a guy on ebay(he originally got it from opie oils for his impreza but has a diesel now and never used it)

But when it arrived it was the 4T 300V competition for bikes, is it still ok to use on my impreza,my cars a 99 uk turbo 2000 and has some engine mods running around the 300bhp mark(VF35 turbo, apexi,STI I/C etc)

an answer from yourself would be great

Thanks

oilman 09 June 2008 03:21 PM

I am told that it's the same stuff with friction modifiers for the bike wet clutches. It should be fine for your car.

zedy 20 August 2008 03:57 PM

hey i want to buy some oil, for a 97 turbo 82k on it, do me a good deal its currently running mobils super s 10w 40 semi syn, what you got for me?

oilman 28 August 2008 08:50 PM

Weve got that, or you can upgrade to a 5w-40 synthetic for better quality if you wish.

Have a look here 5w-40 oil If you want the best then look at the ester based synthtics of the Silkolene Pro S and the Motul 300v. If you dont want to go that far then have a look at the Motul 8100 Xcess 5w-40 and the Mobil 1 Synt S 5w-40.

oilman can you tell me which oil i should use(make and viscocity) in my my06 jdm sti... i live in cyprus where temperatures in summer nights are about 30 degress and summer middays over 40 celcius... in the winter at best temperaturea rarely fall under 10 degress...
also the current oil temp readings im getting( using valvoline semisynthetic 10w40) are about 70-75 |( 80 when driven hard not more).. could this be due to the position of the sensor (over oil filter in sandwich plate)??
also which oil should i use in the gearbox?
finally the car is pretty much standar except a complete exhaust and a remap...
thanks, charis..

hi oilman what oils do you recomend for my car its a 2001 subaru impreza wrx bugeye model the car is being serviced soon and i need to know what engine oil , gearbox oil and diff oil i need :) the car is completly standard except for an sti backbox and the car is used normally never taken on a track :)

stiscooby 02 September 2008 11:38 PM

Hi Oilman,

I have a 2004 UK STI, few mods (Exhaust, sports CAT, fuel pump, uprated TMIC, ECUTek remap) taking it to 342Bhp, used as a daily car where I do about 15 miles a day to work and back.

What would you recommend please? I think it currently has Silkolene fully synthetic in it from the last service (not sure exactly which one), in my old Classic scoob I use to use Castrol RS 10W60.

Geordie_Aaron 23 September 2011 08:35 PM

oh well.

joz8968 23 September 2011 09:25 PM

Aaron, for a Classic it's generally accepted by Oilman (Opie Oils) that you're best off with a 10W-40.... Or a 10W-50 if you tend to live in the top of the revband a lot of the time :D ;) e.g. trackdays, clubman racing, lots of fast road use, etc...

A 15W is okay too - just don't go to a 5W or 0W for the cold (the viscosity up to 40deg.C) "W"inter number:-

Fuchs Titan Pro S 10W-40 (or 50)

Millers CFS 10W-40 (or 50)

Motul 300V Competition 15W-50

Gearbox/diff oil - Castrol Syntrax 75W-90 usually does the trick....

Geordie_Aaron 25 September 2011 02:54 AM

Nice one Joz - It wont be seeing a track until next season now so will just be pottering around town for the winter and i've heard nothing but good things about millers on here cheers

Hi

Sorry, been on holiday for the past week.

A 10w-50 is ideal for your car if it's driven hard and these are the ones that we stock.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-659-10w-50.aspx

Both are really good oils, absolute top of the range ones, so go with any brand preference you have.

A 10w-40 is a better choice for normal use

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-657-10w-40.aspx

The best ones are the Gulf Competition, Motul 300V, Redline and Millers CFS. As a cheaper alternative the Fuchs XTR, Motul 6100 and Millers XSS are good choices.

You need a 75w-90 for the gearbox and diff and here are the ones we have.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-90.aspx

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Gulf Competition, Motul Gear 300, Redline 75w-90NS and Millers TRX are ideal. The Castrol Universal, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives.

Cheers

Tim

Oil & filter?

Hi

I would use a 5w-30 oil

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-653-5w-30.aspx

The best ones there are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300V, Mobil ESP, Castrol Edge, Millers XF, Fuchs GT1 and Redline, but the Motul Eco-Energy, Millers XSS and Fuchs XTR are good cheaper alternatives.

If it's under warranty, I don't advise using the Motul 300V as it doen't officially carry ACEA specs, but is still a very good oil.

Cheers

Tim

Cheers for that!

People on here seem to love Millers, what's 'the best' in your professional (not salesman's) opinion?:norty:
Should I be changing it for the winter and then after or will the 40w be fine for year round use?

joz8968 26 September 2011 11:36 AM

Aaaron, Oilman reckons Fuchs Titan Pro S and Millers CFS are equally good as each other. :D

Plus Motul 300V Competition, great too (albeit has a 15W 'cold' weight).

oilman 26 September 2011 12:06 PM

Yes, CFS, Pro S and 300V are as good as each other. I'd also say Gulf Competition and Redline are as good as those.

Cheers

:luxhello:

Are these 2 alternatives much cheaper?

oilman 26 September 2011 01:38 PM

Gulf is cheaper, Redline is roughly the same price as Pro S and Millers, a little bit more though. Everything is cheaper than 300V at the moment.
