I get asked many questions about oil so I thought a thread here for all oil related questions would be a good idea and build into a FAQ or reference point for others.
So, put your oil questions here but please give the following information if you would like a recommendation: Make Model Year Engine size/type Any mods Type of use (road/track) Additional info (max oil temps, current oil used) What do you want a recommendation for? i have a Q for you oilman, i recently bought Motul 300V 15w50 off a guy on ebay(he originally got it from opie oils for his impreza but has a diesel now and never used it)
But when it arrived it was the 4T 300V competition for bikes, is it still ok to use on my impreza,my cars a 99 uk turbo 2000 and has some engine mods running around the 300bhp mark(VF35 turbo, apexi,STI I/C etc) an answer from yourself would be great Thanks |
I am told that it's the same stuff with friction modifiers for the bike wet clutches. It should be fine for your car.

hey i want to buy some oil, for a 97 turbo 82k on it, do me a good deal its currently running mobils super s 10w 40 semi syn, what you got for me?

Weve got that, or you can upgrade to a 5w-40 synthetic for better quality if you wish.
Have a look here 5w-40 oil If you want the best then look at the ester based synthtics of the Silkolene Pro S and the Motul 300v. If you dont want to go that far then have a look at the Motul 8100 Xcess 5w-40 and the Mobil 1 Synt S 5w-40. Cheers Guy |
oilman can you tell me which oil i should use(make and viscocity) in my my06 jdm sti... i live in cyprus where temperatures in summer nights are about 30 degress and summer middays over 40 celcius... in the winter at best temperaturea rarely fall under 10 degress...
also the current oil temp readings im getting( using valvoline semisynthetic 10w40) are about 70-75 |( 80 when driven hard not more).. could this be due to the position of the sensor (over oil filter in sandwich plate)?? also which oil should i use in the gearbox? finally the car is pretty much standar except a complete exhaust and a remap... thanks, charis.. |
hi oilman what oils do you recomend for my car its a 2001 subaru impreza wrx bugeye model the car is being serviced soon and i need to know what engine oil , gearbox oil and diff oil i need :) the car is completly standard except for an sti backbox and the car is used normally never taken on a track :)

I have a 2004 UK STI, few mods (Exhaust, sports CAT, fuel pump, uprated TMIC, ECUTek remap) taking it to 342Bhp, used as a daily car where I do about 15 miles a day to work and back. What would you recommend please? I think it currently has Silkolene fully synthetic in it from the last service (not sure exactly which one), in my old Classic scoob I use to use Castrol RS 10W60. |

Aaron, for a Classic it's generally accepted by Oilman (Opie Oils) that you're best off with a 10W-40.... Or a 10W-50 if you tend to live in the top of the revband a lot of the time :D ;) e.g. trackdays, clubman racing, lots of fast road use, etc...
A 15W is okay too - just don't go to a 5W or 0W for the cold (the viscosity up to 40deg.C) "W"inter number:- Fuchs Titan Pro S 10W-40 (or 50) Millers CFS 10W-40 (or 50) Motul 300V Competition 15W-50 Gearbox/diff oil - Castrol Syntrax 75W-90 usually does the trick.... |
Nice one Joz - It wont be seeing a track until next season now so will just be pottering around town for the winter and i've heard nothing but good things about millers on here cheers

Yes, CFS, Pro S and 300V are as good as each other. I'd also say Gulf Competition and Redline are as good as those.

Gulf is cheaper, Redline is roughly the same price as Pro S and Millers, a little bit more though. Everything is cheaper than 300V at the moment.
