Hi Tim,

03 JDM spec c current power levels are about 350 currently using 5w/ 40 millers nanodrive
I'm about to change turbo and injectors to up to power to around the 430 mark would you stick with the same oil or would you change to a 10w/ 40.... I'm not using any oil and temps are normal...

Many thanks, CSF \ lee

Hi Lee

As there are no changes to the internals, I would have a look at the oil temps after the new turbo is fitted. If the oil temp is still relatively normal, I'd stick with a 5w-40, or go for a 10w-50 if the temp is over about 120C.

Cheers

Hi oilman ,
I've got a wrx sti 2016 and it's just about to have a 1000 mile oil change but will also add a decat , plugs , filter and remap circa 350 bhp but it's not driven very often but when it is it will be given the treatment as at the moment it's been only run in. What would you recommend ?

Hi

I would use a 5w-40

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT, Motul Sport/300V, Red Line and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XF Longlife, Fuchs GT1 XTL/Supersyn, Gulf Formula G/ULE, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

Cheers

Hi oilman,

I have a 70,000 mile 05 Impreza STi widetrack with DCCD running 320bhp. Generally not driven very hard but will have the occasional blast.

I stuck to 5w40 in my old stock 02 WRX, once tried 5w30 and the engine sounded a little noisier at warm idle.

Before I got it, my car was looked after by a reputable garage who used 10w60. Should I stick with this?

I used Redline Shockproof Lightweight in the WRX's box and diff (mainly to cure the synchro crunch), what should I be using in the DCCD box?

Also, is Motul Inugel Optimal still the correct coolant to use?

Thanks.

Hi

As it's not been hugely modified, I don't see any reason to use a thick oil, a 5w-40 is ideal for that engine.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT, Motul Sport/300V, Red Line and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XF Longlife, Fuchs GT1 XTL/Supersyn, Gulf Formula G/ULE, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

As the DCCD box can be very fussy, I would use the Motul Gear 300

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-899-motu...-diff-oil.aspx

The diff needs a SAE90 LSD oil, like the Fuchs Titan Race Gear 90LS, Castrol Axle Z or Motul 90PA.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-679-sae-90-gear-oils.aspx

Officially, the Inugel isn't suitable, the only thing that seems to meet the exact spec is the Subaru own brand coolant, but I've not heard of any issues using the Inugel.

Cheers

Thanks Tim.

I've just seen another thread where other oils are recommended before the above;

https://www.scoobynet.com/drivetrain...l#post11516129

Obviously, that post was a couple of years ago and I'm aware that things change and further tests are carried out... but just wondering why you don't put the Gear 300LS above the Fuchs Titan Race Gear 90LS any more?

Thanks.

P.S. I'm no oil connaisseur but I don't mind paying a little extra for a better product.

Am I right in thinking 3.5-4L for the DCCD box and 0.8 for the rear diff?

Hi

With the DCCD box, I have had people contact me with problems with pretty much all oils, other than the Gear 300. In fairness, I think the guy who was complaining about the Millers CRX had a gearbox that needed replacing, but I can't be sure on that. The Gear 300 is top stuff and seems to always work.

On paper, the Gear 300 LS etc are the best options, but some can be a bit fussy and the SAE 90 mineral oils are safe option.

If it's a 5 speed box it takes 3.5L and 4.1L for the 6 speed. The diff takes 0.8L.

Cheers

maybe i could find ester based oils(i could find motul 300v but i heard it's not good for catalytic converter?)

could you advice oil for me?

and, i changed diff oil 3 months ago.i used motul gear 300 LS, i read your recommendations and you generally advice motul gear 300. is it problem for me gear 300 LS ? (i have r180 sti diff)

Hi Semih

Just replied to your pm. The 300V 15w-5 will be ideal for your car and won't upset the catalytic converter.

The Gear 300LS is ideal for the diff.

Cheers

Good point, I think 15w-50 would be more sensible.

I'd place it in the 'Soy/Worcester sauce' category.

Hi Semih

If it's getting cold where you are, a 5w-40 will be fine. How hot does it get in the summer and how cold in the winter where you are?

I thought you were in a hot part as you mentioned the 10w-60 in the pm.

Cheers

summer sometimes i saw 40C but generally i watch over engine

previous owner changed oil then i bought the car, in Turkey imprezas generally use 10w-60 or 300v 15w-50 but i don't want to use 10w-60 grade

Semih

Hi Semih

With that kind of temp range, I think a 5w-40 for winter and 15w-50 for summer would be the best option.

Hi, not sure if you can help, but i have a six speed in my classic with dccd, it's running 536 BHP and does a lot of drag racing, it's has the motul 300 in for the last 12 months and when hot crunches and grinds a bit on quick gear changes, is there another gear oil you can recommend for me to see if it helps or cures.
Thanks.

Hi

I would go for the Red Line Lightweight Shockproof. Not cheap, but very good stuff.

Hi

You need a 75w-90 GL5 oil.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-90-gear-oil.aspx

The Millers CRX NT, Motul Gear 300, Red Line 75w-90NS and Gulf Competition are ideal as top end options. The Millers TRX Synthetic/EE Nanodrive, Mobil SHC, Castrol Syntrax Universal Plus and Valvoline Synpower TDL are good, but a step down from the top oils. Fuchs Gear Syn, Motul Motylgear, Millers TRX Semi and Castrol Universal are good, cheaper options.

Cheers

I've just bought some gulf competition for my engine, so would it be a good idea to get the same for the gearbox aswell ? I was thinking of replacing the rear diff oil aswell, so would you recommend gulf for that also ?.

Cheers Tim. Good as ever

Hi

Yes, the Gulf Competition is ideal for the gearbox and diff and a 5L can will do both.
