Diplomacy doesn't always work, and those who believe wholeheartly in it can do more harm than good, "I have in my hand a piece of paper" springs to mind. Does anyone ever actually want to go to war? I think not, however, sometimes it's a necessary evil.

I for one am grateful to the men and women of our armed forces, past and present, for their sacrifices on our behalf.

Everyone seems to want to justify killing just one way or another. So, I'm Sorry, I cant be part of this crap. Feel free to justify it because you like someone in particular. But I'm out of here death wise.

You really are so far off the mark that it is difficult to believe how you can come to such a way of thinking about the military services.

Do you really think I was as you say sitting in that aircraft just hoping that someone would drop a nuke on a member of Nato so that I could go rushing off and lay a bucket of sunshine on a military target and get killed in the process as well as the thought that my family and the rest of my country was going to be flattened?

You are out of your tree to think that. I was doing that particular job in an effort to ensure that such a war would never start in the first place! That was the whole arrangement behind "MAD" as awful as that situation was at the time.

Every bloke I knew in the Services agreed with me that war is obscene, it leads of course to dreadful destruction and worse than that a gross loss of human life. That was the last thing any of us wanted to see at any cost.

Do you think however that we should not have any military forces for the protection of the people in this country? If we are attacked should we just stand back and allow the enemy to walk in and take us over no doubt accompanied with the rape and pillage just to keep them occupied because we did not fight back!" How would you feel about being under the **** jackboot because our forces were not there to protect us during the dark days of WW2?

I don't know if Billy Boy is your hero but you should remember that he has sent our forces to take part in 5 wars so far! Do you honestly think that the country including the Services really wanted to take part in the illegal attack on Iraq? Do you not realise how sorry we all feel about the destruction of that country and the tens of thousands of lives that were lost.

I mentioned who it is that really starts wars, it is politicians and the leaders who do that-never the people. You should put your efforts into trying to persuade them not to start wars rather than shout at and vilify people like me!

Your attack on me was not only unwarranted but extremely unpleasant and also broke the SN rules about posting. You should consider yourself very lucky not to have been banned in my opinion. I think that at the very least I can reasonably expect is an apology.

My grateful thanks to those who supported me here.

Agreed.
RIP is completely missing the point between something that a group of american thugs did and what Les did.

Bit of a History lesson for you.
During the cold war, Russia lacked technology, so they compensated with numbers.

It wouldnt matter if NATO forces shot down 20 aircraft for every one of ours, there would be thirty more waiting to take their place. It was the same with naval and land forces.

It might be difficult for you to contemplate, but it was a hard fact that if war had broken out, we would have fought till we lost with conventional weapons, then we would have fought until we lost with tactical nuclear weapons, then we would have faught until we lost with strategic nuclear weapons.

The only tactic that thwarted this was the concept of MAD, Mutually Assured Destruction. NATO let it be known that should the USSR destroy us, we could guarantee that they would be destroyed too.

Les was part of this concept and as such he is the reason you're not living in a fallout shelter in the middle of a nuclear winter right now.

Its even more of a statement when you consider it was common knowledge that his mission was a one way ticket. Even if he had performed a minor miracle and penetrated Soviet defences and hit his targets, there would be nothing for him to come back to.

Under the circumstances, you might want to reconsider comparing him to some inbred jarhead rapists and show a little respect.
astraboy.

It's one thing to be a pacifist, it's another to pick a fight with an individual who served his country. That's pretty shabby IMHO.

Don't feed the troll.
