Dunno the exact number, but it is a lot. I'm sure I've posted this before, but we (being me, the petrol head who used to manage BCA and a guy with a scrap Allegro) decided to test the Allegro on Avgas once. Until recently, Belfast city could only fly stuff in and out before 9.00 PM. We had late night access to the runway. We tanked it up with Avgas and took it for a run. Nothing much happened. Petrol head manager started messing about with timing lights and 'adjusting' the carb. (Turn some of them screws and see what happens) Then, for several seconds, we had a 150 MPH Allegro. (OK - Maybe 120, but I was driving and couldn't see a thing after 110 due to the vibration) Then, strangely, it blew up. Pretty much everything siezed and we had to shift it off the runway with a forklift, which none of us had any idea how to drive.

Ahhhh - the olden days Roger the mad manager reckoned that it blew up because we had to advance the timing so far, and that if we could get something with a turbo and could increase the boost far enough we could make a 200 MPH super car from an ordinary family car

I loved my Allegros - had 3 of them and did Marble Arch to Headington, Oxford, roundabout late one night in the 1750 Sport with 4 passengers in 35 minutes!

The commercial stuff is down in the low 120s I think, it's still not to good for cars though Because it also has quite a high lubricant content, kind of like 2 stroke pre-mix Although I bet it would make a rotary Mazda shift quite nicely

Chipping the lead out of the exhausts and engine cowlings of Lancasters was one of my Granddad's jobs during the war. Apparently if left to accumulate, it had a significant effect on the way they flew

I remember after the first Gulf War and Red Adaire was putting out the oil well fires and he stated that the pressure was such that even if it was not on fire and only gas was being ejected, if you put your hand over the well the pressures is enough to render your flesh from bone...... I can think of many people I would like to throw in there
