If you remove the front plate from the BT NTE5 faceplate then normally you'll only find 4 push fit terminals.

2,3 & 5 are used to connect the BT master socket to any other extension sockets.

2 = blue/white
3 = orange/white (ring wire)
4 = white/orange (not used)
5 = white/blue

The master socket has a capacitor which separates out the ringing onto a separate wire.

However the ring wire (3 & 4) can be a major source of interference for ADSL and you can sometimes see significant performance improvements by disconnecting them at the master socket and at any extension sockets.

Plus your phone extensions will still ring assuming that they each have an ADSL microfilter because this contains the same ring capacitor as the master socket.

My home ADSL went from an unreliable 1.5Mbit/s to a reliable 4Mbit/s when I did this. I improved it even further to 5Mbit/s by fitting a filtered ADSL faceplate to the NTE5 master socket but this is only practical if your router is next to your master socket.

Regards, Mark

Thanks Mark, I'm going to remove 3 and 4 then and see if it helps.
