Here is my account of Blairs last ten years and his legacy...
He carried on the great work started by John Major in Northern Ireland and the fruits of that labour are to be applauded. A fantastic result, something that 20 years ago could only be dreamt of.
Alas, the positives end there and the harsh reality of a failed man make up the rest of what he will be remembered for.
The war on terror has been a farcical debacle. Years in Afghanistan fighting cave men who happen to know a terrorist who may or may not be the brains behind a franchised global cult, with nothing positive to show for our efforts.
Taking the country to war on the pretext of lies and condeming hundreds of UK soldiers to their deaths in a war they shouldnt be involved in was ,and always will be Blairs key legacy. How the man can sleep at night is beyond me.
I had never heard of MRSA and it's unfriendly cousins killing people in hospitals, nor witnessed the ludicrous triage system where waiting times are "slashed" because some receptionist has asked you why your bleeding from your ears. The NHS is worse now than it has ever been.
For me Blair was the catalyst for the destruction of politics in the UK. 15 years ago, the Tories represented the mid-right to right side of politics, the labour party represented the mid-left to socialist side and the lib dems / SDP / SDLP reflected the undecided liberal fruitcakes and the protest voters... The line from left to right was long and each party had it's hard line and it's more central opinions - a true reflection of society.
Then came Blair, wrenching labour from it's unionist and socilaist roots, rebranding it and dumping it side by side on the same piece of political turf as the Lib Dems... It's hard line lefties left wondering where to turn... Some turned to socialist parties, some fell away and stopped voting but (and this was the gamble in 97 that paid off) most just voted Labour because they could and always had.
Then eventually the tories realised that the New Labour approach to tackling the middle england vote was working and finally jumped onto the same patch of turf as the Lib Dems and Labour...
Now we have a mass of people who are no longer represented in politics and the key driver, the main reason for so much voter apathy is due to Blair selling his party down the river on a power trip just to gain power - bollocks to principles.
Street Crime has never been so high... Blairs answer? CCTV cameras, fewer and fewer police, useless community officers avoiding the rough areas and strolling round the posh ones - just token gestures in dayglow jackets.
Obesity at an all time high with Blair needing a campaign by a slabbering tv chef tw@t to encourage him to actually try and do something about the state of school dinners...
Immigration making a mockery of the ludicrous minimum wage. Introduced to ensure crap jobs get slight less crap pay, but all the while the slightly less crap jobs that earnt that bit more stayed the same... Genius! A pay rise for being stupid and crap while the less stupid and crap get nothing...
Whordes of unqualified eastern europeans building and cleaning and picking fruit while our own nurses leave in their hundreds because of pay and conditions.
A worldwide reputation for being Americas bitch. Targets now for muslim extremists who want to bomb the hell out of our multicultural land why? Bacause of what Blairs impact on global politics...
Cash for honours, Mandelson, Blunkett, a deputy PM who punches people and slacks off, sleeze at every turn... Dragging the reputation of this country and it's poitics down to all new levels...
Petrol strikes, Firemen strikes, pathetic ways at trying to improve PR with stunts like "Am I bovvered", dodgy holidays at innapropriate times...
Exams getting easier, schooling getting worse, more student debt, about turns on privatisation and tuition fees. Employing as many people as possible in councils to hide unemployment figures and for the rest, shove 'em on New Deal as that doesn't count as unemployed... Woeful...
He is without question the most inept Prime Minister of my lifetime (although there have only been 5) who has contributed far far more bad than good to this once great nation.
The public were right to relieve the Conservative Party of their duties in 1997. Alas now we are at a point in British politics whereby the once retarded apathetic constituent, who couldnt be bothered voting and was wrong not to, is now right not to...
All we have wide of the 3 main parties are Socialists, UKIP and the BNP and thanks in part to our FPTP system whats the point in any of it anymore...
All of the above is just my opinion of course... Ta Muchly

Historic day and a sad one for all those who realise what the history books will show .........
One of our Greatest Leaders of all time will be announcing his retirement ......
A tragic loss for the country - will we ever see his like again? Certainly, I cannot see any Leadership qualities in the options before us
Thank You for Leading us away from the disasters of the previous administration and showing us the future ....
May your God go with you ......

You are quick to sing praises for them but what will you say when the economy goes down the tubes, as in Callaghan's day?

We are not in Callaghans day, or Thatchers day .... we are moving from Blair day to Brown day.
The fact remains that Blair and Brown have overseen the longest sustained economic recovery in the UKs recent history ....... you remember the boom/bust of the Tories and 15% Interest Rates and the collapse of the Housing Market don't you? ALL under the Tories!!
Everyone is so much better off now than they were in 1997 - in REAL terms!!

Whist Thatcher went a bit mad at the end of her term at least we were not so much the 51st state of Amercia like we are now and OK there was a bust but where the hell has the boom been under this government ? Plenty of non economic booms such as immigration, tax burden, people moved off NHS waiting lists etc. Certainly most things were better then that interest me.
The lies and spin make me sick its never been this bad nor has the errosion of civil liberties. This government is ending up like many so called socialist parts such as those in Germany and Russia in the 30s and ended up looking very much like a fascist dictatorship.
Sooner these Labour idiots are moved on the better. Don't hold out any hope for Gordon Brown as he's clearly a nutter.

Questions for you:- why did Flash flog off half of our gold reserves at the lowest possible price thus losing £2 billion of the country's money as well as putting us in greater financial danger.
How can you say that the economy is so strong when he is forced into doing such a thing. The IMF has already criticised his efforts with our economy and his borrowing has exceeded all previous records! It is all a house of cards!
What were the interest rates and inflation under the Labour government if you feel you have to quote the rates under the Conservatives? And do you remember when the IMF refused to lend them any more cash. Do you remember the Winter of Discontent? And let me remind you that the economy was in top condition when NL took power and they have frittered it all away!

Les,
With all due respect I feel that criticising this government on the economy is not really the best point of attack. Built on borrowing or not and whether or not the collapse we have been promised for the last 7 years by anti-goverment doom mongers happens the fact remains that for the average man on the street and more importantly business owners the country's economy has been remarkably stable for the last 10 years, far more so than for the 10 that preceded it.
Sure Gordon Brown has made some big mistakes, but it's a bit of a laugh having a pop at him over selling gold reserves for instance when compared to the amount that was frittered away one night under the previous government for no other reason than that of ego it is almost insignificant.
Yes it may well come crashing down around us and if so we will at least have had ten years of stability whereas before it used to come crashing down every 3 or 4 years Agreed the economy was good when Brown took over, but that was down to Ken Clarke, a beacon of common sense in a sea of a succession of idots who held the job prior to him.
Also on a more general point let's please stop digging solely at the government regarding house prices and consumer credit. Much of that is down to the sheer greed of the average Brit and I for one will lose no spleep when those who over extended themselves end up in trouble as it is they who have fuelled the house price boom and it will be better for all in the long term when it levels out.
Now let's get back to their record on law and order, education, the NHS, Iraq ....

To state that the Economy is in a worse state NOW than it was in 1997 is just plain stupid You could have attacked NL on a multitude of things which haven't gone quite right ........ to select the VERY thing which HAS gone perfectly shows your lack of knowledge on all things political
Want to select something else to attack NL on? You daft old git!

Just shows the complete and utter bollox of the Infraction System ...
Having a differring opinion is justification for an Infraction it would seem
One of the most popular threads too!!
#174
its popular because Tony is so unpopular, see that Prescott sneaked his resignation in under Tonys, Gordon wont support a double standarded fat oafish thug in his cabinet.
Tony has done one positive thing by standing down and that is with no viable leader to take over he has assured the tories victory at the next election

The Tories can gain percentage points until they actually declare what their Policies are, thats easy to do.
When they have to say how they will square the circle of tax cuts and increased spending on the essentials we shall see, I think the wheels will fall off.

It is so noticeable that you refuse to answer the questions that I asked you in my post. Why is that?
I was stating facts, you in typical NL fashion just tell us all what you would like to be true even though you know full well it is all balderdash.
Come on, tell us the peak inflation and interest rates during Wilson's and Callaghan's governments. Then tell us why you keep quoting what they were under the Conservatives but not under Labour. We must be fair about it if the truth must out after all! And why did Flash suddenly become forced to flog half our gold reserves at bottom price as well?

Wilson and Callaghan have no effect on anything today, so are irrellevant.
Would you like to state what the rates were under Napoleon? Elizabeth I? Henry 8th? Thought not - they are as relevant.
