What do your digital sculptures smell of, by the way? Hot computer fans? Are they "Art", in any sense of the word?

Once you ditch your bile, you might admit that there is merit in the piece and just get on with your life.

Probably too late now, but what would have been good to have seen, would have been lots of photos taken from the same angle, same lighting etc as more and more wood had been chipped away

That would have been a good piece of animation then, from block to final form, like stop motion

Whilst 3d work on a computer can look good, to me as a non artist, I much prefer the actual to the virtual, I dont know its like you can tell the amount of work and time that has gone into something that is real

Both are a skill in their own right, but I know which I prefer

The difference is - I have never claimed that what I do is art. It's creative - but not art. You on the other hand... well....

Everyone seems to think it's art and I've not seen any attempt to deny it.

no bile - just valid criticism... as I said, if you can't take it, I'll leave.

Out of interest what's your take on my craftwork on the You tube link.

My opinion was not asked for, but you are going to get it
UB, what you do is fantastic, admirable and very clever
But to be able to take a piece of wood and transform it into something you can touch, smell and believe really lived is something special
I can't do what you can UB, I can't do what Bubba can, but I can admire and enjoy

what cracks me up about this thread is the fact that so many comments and differing opinions have been posted on (at the end of the day what is a big piece of wood ) and has run into tons of pages, yet a similar post where someone says, here's my scoob, what do you think ? dosent generate the same amount of feelings and responses. Which is odd as this is chiefly a car forum I think that speaks volumes and maybe demonstrates that when it comes down to it, our cars are just a hunk of metal, yet a hunk of wood can bring out so many differing points of view .

And just for the record, I too have a background in art and so have been following this thread with great interest, purely on the basis of one man's achievement in doing something he loves and not on the basis of deciding what is art and what is not..leave that to the south bank show and the art elitist I say . I for one, have seen and experienced enough crap maskerading as "art" in my lifetime twice over

Keep going bob, geoff , it's going well

Thanks Swiss... I think. I admit that I started the thread as a pretext for showing off a little. But, to be fair I've not really sculpted before and it's been extremely gratifying to get the responses, both good and bad. It seems to be a fact of life that someone's endeavour ALWAYS gets a mixed response. To some people, what I've been w*rking on is a "lump of ****", to others it's been intriguing to see the project develop. I'm sorry that UB has been banned, but he seems intent upon alienating even those few who are prepared to give him the time of day.

you are welcome..... I think
what would have been good, is to have seen UB post up a thread about one of his digital sculptures alongside yours and then see just what kind of reaction each got. Each of you obvioulsy enjoy what you do, but I bet a fiver that the hunk of wood would win

Think the 'subtle' difference is that although UB does have an undoubted talent with the images he creates on a computor, the vast majority of people still think in 'bread and butter ' terms and have held a twig /log/old floorboard/chunk of wood and can associate what work would go into creating the work that you have done thus far. Personally I think youve done extremely well with it, as oak is quite an unforgiving medium to work on.
ok , truth be known, im miffed my trilobite never materialised, but Ill forgive you that small oversight.. keep up the work on your carving.. its a talent you have , dont waste it .

I've been w*rking on it a bit tonight, then I've given it an experimental coat of oil, to try to get some idea of the finished look.

Evening, Unclefcuk. I thought you weren't going to troll this thread anymore.
