Big chunk of oak, what shall I carve out of it?
I am unable to understand what that carved chunk of oak has done to attract such criticism
Don't people put up their project cars on SN to show what they are doing with it? Why is it such a problem with someone exhibiting his work progress on a piece of wood?

G'day TH
It shouldn't be a problem. There's always (or should be) room for constructive critisism but, as with too many threads on SN, it turns nasty. Art, craft, call it what you will is very subjective. Some people rave about the Mona Lisa yet I think it's ordinary. Doesn't make me (or them come to that) right or wrong. It's just personal preference.
Take UB's digital creations. They're fantastic for what they are but they're not my cup of Tetley's. Damn near impossible to put on your coffee table too
I think 84 said something similar but I wish I had the skill to do either

Hi, Mark
Mona Lisa is not my style either, TBH
What I am getting at is the constant and irrelevant negative criticism by one to another one's work. In my opinion, if someone doesn't think that the work is up to the mark, he/she will say it and move off to another thread to gain some stimulation. When someone is picking on every move of the threadmaker, it creates the doubts of that person being highly unsure about himself; unless he gives other reasons why he is doing so. I am just after the reason from the criticiser. So far attention seeking is concerned, we all want it and need it. It's a fact that we can't deny. May be, the criticiser is thinking that the originator of this thread is out for undue and excessive attention and appreciation? If yes, he might as well say so. Then he may justify why he thinks like this.
Bear it in mind that it matters not if someone calls this work of the threadmaker mediocre or even "not worth it". It's the repetative echo of the sentiment in caustic ways, that is in question.
To my eyes, UB's work is good
Bubba has done well with his carving too

That's looking awesome Bubba, I'm really impressed
Looking at that makes me feel inspired to go and have a go at some wood carving myself, the nearest I've got so far is chopping some hardwood logs into firewood
