Hillclimbing, the 2007 Season Project.
Just blagged my way back from Germany on an early flight to Brum. This is what this......

Looks like when you drop it from 6 feet on it side...

But glad to see my mate was on with getting something to run with at the weekend...
Wife thinks Prodrive have moved in, I bet they dont swap engines with fork trucks...

Better get my overalls on then! Fridge full of beer to see us through the night. Will get to Shelsley Rob, but cant see me being competative.

I'll be good and early at Shelsley I'll walk the hill with you and explain as we go what its all about if you like.
note: the small red wire, forgot where it was now hanging loose

Nice gear, I can't help but think the turbo is quattro bound though, not sure why, news to me? Pete and dad are always up to no good in their compound, something new and shiny bolted on evey week.
Graham, less weight and more cooling is good in any conditions?

Not sure if this is the right place for it, but has anyone on here got any tips on how to get started in hill-climbing? I'm in East Anglia if that helps to point me in the right direction. But it's basically uphill sprinting on a single tarmac stage, isn't it?
Yes.
look at The Official Hagley & District Light Car Club Website
You are not in the best geographical place, but many travel long and far.
This should scale it for you:
Assuming you have a saloon car:
License and membership of a recognised car club = £100/season
Full season of hillclimb = approx £1000 to cover entries (about 12 events)
Fuel/B&B/bacon sarnies etc = £50/meeting
Race suit/helmet = £500 tops
Car prep for each race = £1!
Car maintenance = £500 /season (tyres/oil etc)
Now you know why we do it.
Remember though, a full hillclimb is only 4 minutes of racing.
Best go to one and weigh it up first, but you could get hooked.
Be warned and don't blame us after.

Prescott tomorrow, looks like it's going to be wet sunday so anything can happen, especially as I only have slicks.
Pete and I have just finished fitting this, nice piece of kit very well made and 600bhp potential.

Lots of bits done to my car in the fortnight off but no time now pics vids and all the usual guff tomorrow.

Good luck everyone this weekend. Some nice shiny bits going on there Pete! Are there other mods in the pipeline which require all that extra intercooling?
If I'm to do more hill climbing then I definitely need more low down torque. I just didn't have the pull out of chicanes last weekend that I needed and let's not even talk about the last bend (Burma). Graham, were you handbraking it around Burma? Was thinking I might need one of those fancy centre diffs which disengages whent he handbrake I pulled

Nice one Graham, I think I'm going to go along to one and see what it's like. Presumably as long as I join an MSA-recognised local club that'll get me started. Maintenance is an ongoing thing with me anyway and a race suit will be a one-off expense. I think I can get a single layer fire retardant suit (not Nomex) for about £100.
So do I join the local car club first or the MSA? And is it possible to enter just a few races rather than an entire season's worth?

LOL yes my local clubs seem to be more into autotest. And the only full size circuit round here is Snetterton. There are some hills around, north Essex mainly.
Silent:
Join any recongnised car club, the is why I gave you The Official Hagley & District Light Car Club Website as it is the club I'm very much part of!
Joining the MSA is mandatory as they issue the race license.
In a season, you can enter one race or even 20+, and no need for any championship.
If the Harriman's fit any more parts they will go slower due to the weight gain!

Pete's EVO just has to be seen. Fab car.
Gary:
No handbrake turns for me! far too fast/complicated a '90 degree right' for me; an absolute cracker of a hill climb finish!
Hard on the brakes, swear a lot, panic a whole lot more and go for it!
You lot just don't know what you all missed at Epynt.
A 'must-do' hillclimb next year.
Graham.

Practice day, stayed dry for our runs, which is great for today but as far as practice goes dry running may be no use if it is still raining like when I left today, monsoon springs to mind.
After the cars breif spell at Zen last week it is just amazing, Paul's idea of a new up pipe and porting the headers has made spool up so much better, he rebuilt my knackered rear diff and made it much tighter launching me out of corners like a mad thing and allowing me to run the diff far more open eliminating the time sapping near death understeer that plagued me last time. Problem is now I'm re-learning the thing again, but that's what this is all about, less than 12 months in the sport for me and much, much less for Paul modding my car to suit the sport, the progress is excellent.
Careful first run wondering if puddles greeted me round any of the blind corners made a 48.24 which is not good but I could instantly feel the impovement in the car, hours and hours later after some big accidents in other classes we got our second run and I pushed a bit, pulling a 1.93 launch arriving everywhere quicker than I ever have before and battering the rev limiter where I'm used to waiting for it to come on boost up to semi-circle corner and coasting in, pansying around semi-circle for fear of falling off and realising I could be carrying an extra 15mph still managed to beat my PB and post a 47.2, not as quite as quick as the front runners but I left so, so much time on the hill, so when I adapt to the car in it's new found amazing state and if it stays dry tomorrow it should be quick.
I have never enjoyed driving the car as much as I did today, and if it can get me this confident on my bogey hill of Prescott the outlook is good at Shelsley, Loton and anywhere else for that matter.
It just depends on the weather.
Can you guess where this car gets worked on?

Paul's old underbrace and the return to sump catch can hose.

A pipe of some description

Keith Edwards new turbo, I have never seen anything like it, 1200bhp potential!?!?!

I'll try and post some vids tomorrow.

Great progress Rob!
Abandoned my wait for a 3rd run as the rain hammered down, what missery...
Fingers crossed for tomorrow and a good dose of hillclimbing!
If the V8 does not make it back, you could be there for a 1st by the sound of it!
I need a bigger engine....
..maybe then I can keep up.
Have a look on my chassis thread on the vid clips Trish took, i think you will find them interesting, esp Pardon.
Apparently, we were far more spectacular than the EVO boys.

This time last year you thought evo's were uncatchable, I'm glad you have found a bit of hope, not ahead yet though!
Weather out look is sh*t for tomorrow your marangoni's should serve you well, slicks should see me scared.
Catch you in the morning.

What a character building weekend for me, but would like to say well done to Pete and Rob doing such good runs, and I'm sure Rob would agree, Pete was On It to say the least.
Get a bigger turbo Pete!
See you all in August!

Graham.

Race day at Prescott and what a mess, rain, mud, river running down the track, we had it all.
Meeting was delayed start and every single driver was called to walk the first section of the track with the clerk of the course so he could show is the water flowing down it and warn us all about it, they spoke about cancelling the meeting but it finaly went ahead.
First run on my slicks, I thought "how bad can it be?", answer it can be very bad. I have never felt so helpless in a car before, the speeds wern't dangerous on a personal level, but for pretty much the whole run I could have slid off with no choice in the matter and bent the car which scares my wallet! I posted a 61.99, putting me last but 1, great. Roy led with a 52.10, Graham 2nd on 53.3, Pete 3rd on 54.11, and Geoff with a very impressive 56 4th. Roger in the A4 did a 58 leaving him nowhere and looking like leaving with no points for the championship if conditions didn't improve. I almost trailered up at lunch time but the rain stopped and I thought what the hell I'll get my moneys worth.
2nd run the river had stopped flowing and the bottom half of the track was wet but no standing water which did me in on the first run. I decided to open the dccd out and let the car move around as the biggest problem I had on the first run was no steering, maybe becasue of the standing water or maybe because I had the diffs nearly locked out. I found I could drive the bottom section of the course but got a big shock up on the level section after pardon hair pin the grip was gone again and it was a bit of a lottery on staying on or not. I made it to the finish line in 1 piece (just) and saw my time of 51.96, back from Pete and Roy but just ahead of Graham, I couldn't quite believe it, I got back to the pits and the commentator declared Pete the class leader with an excellent 49.40, I was well chuffed for him.
I ran down to see the A4 launch as the last car of our batch and lo and behold it wasn't there, the next class was up and it was nowhere in sight, and as the commentator said "this should be Roger Banks but it's not?". Apparently there were some 'issues' with the car that meant it couldn't run in order on the sopping wet track with the rest of us, and a red flag and long wait in the following class buying even more time saw the A4 finaly go up some 20 minutes after us on a much dryer track which is just bullsh*t as far as I'm concerned. He posted a 48.44 taking the win, but as usual nothing was done about it, which just stinks and makes a mockery of the sport, maybe he would have gone faster anyway but we will never know, but the absolute and utter desperation to win won it at the end of the day by fair means or foul, it's a shame.
So a miserable wet weekend which could have been much worse, Pete finaly got the better of Roy and I managed to wing my way to a 4th in class, a result I wouldn't have minded in the dry so can't complain on slicks in the wet!
Well done to Pete he drove amazingly and deserved to win.
Got a few weeks off now but for once I have no real plans for the car! I would like to thank Paul at Zen for putting the time in recently to finaly make the car the well rounded machine it is now, I can't wait to get stuck into the hills and any mods now are just luxurys, some wet tyres, to be able to carry less fuel, maybe an I/C water spray for the hotter months, definately some dark wheels as mine forever look like crap, but that's about it. I no longer feel like any element of the car could be holding me back at my current driving ability and just want to get out there and drive the sh*t out of it for the rest of the season.
