The thing that amazes me about the RS6 is its weight, around 1.8 tonnes. Then compare it the M5 touring at around 2 tonnes and I start thinking that something's going wrong here. The weight of modern cars due to nannytronics, safety cages etc is getting out of hand - compare it to my Range Rover Classic of 1990 which weighs in at a relatively sprightly 1.7 tonnes.

Ive been saying for ages that VW/Audi are over rated for build and reliability, its all b****x's.
Think audi build lots of lemons, more than most other manufacturers.
Always remember working for vw/audi, the joke was about the A4's sunroof, come back after 3 years with wet feet as they have a tendancy to leak a fair bit (the first ones).
You want build quality (main stream car) and german, then buy BMW.

Basically, the RS6 is 64kgs heavier than the E60 M5 based on a like-for-like comparison and here's why:
BMW measure curb weights: car + accessories + full fluids. Don't underestimate the fluids: 5l of oil... plus 5l of washer fluid, brake fluid, Power steering fluid etc etc.
Audi are a little cheeky and measure unladen weights which is just the car (not in a driveable form).
The standard measure is EU1 weights: car + 68kg driver + accessories + full fluids + 90% fuel + 7kg cargo.
Here are the differences (on a like-for-like basis) - the differences are massive!!!!!!
- E60 M5 (saloon): 1844 kgs (EU1) (275 bhp/t), or 1785kgs (curb) (284bhp/t)
- C6 RS6 (saloon): 1908kgs (EU1) (236 bhp/t), or 1840kgs (UNLADEN) (245 bhp/t)

I always thought BMW weighed the car with an average driver in it as well? Its a fair point but with all the emissions regulations etc currently flying round, I'd have thought that most of these salad dodging cars could benefit from some time in the fat farm.

Yes, your 2.5TDI SE Avant is probably a better representation of Audi's reputation for quality.

So - when I look at the 'weight' of other cars in the listings - is it only really Audi that quote unladen? Or is BMW the odd one out?

Ive never read such crap in all my years of motori ng. I own my 2nd RS6 Avant and the description I reply to here is probably the most INNACURATE REVIEW of a car Ive ever read. Audi RS6's have incredible build quality and the interiors leave everyone who has ever been in one feeling one thing..... complimentary. How anyone can call the electric heated Recaro seat with electric lumber supports, satnav tv, phone systems on pod computer system, etc etc is cheap is beyond me. And then go on to have the audacity to compare.....yes compare this car to an Evo 6 or Subaru (both great cars but built for performance rather than cockpit and trim,,,TRUE!) Ive had 3 Evo's and a 22B, RB5 and STi V7 (360BHP) and believe me the overall quality is beyond compare as genuine car enthusiasts would admit
I have never had ride comfort like the RS6 and if this guy had researched the technology in the suspension he would recognise quality beyond compare.
The thing that p1ssed me off most of all is that he says its no motorway cruised. That in itself is total bo11ox and this is the ULTIMATE motorway mile munching Club Class Experience..........what the hell he would expect from a Ferrari with a wife and child shows his mentality towards safety, comfort and performance. Everybody Knows the RS6 is faster than the Ferrari 360 and has the practicality of 5 adults and a bootload of space for whatever the occasion.
I'd be intrigued to see if he's bought anything since the testdrive and if so what it is....................i'll bet its sub £30k

hail-hail - seeing as you weren't overly impressed with the RS6 (which is a shame - lovely cars, but as you say, every manufacturer has a few lemons) - what about something a bit different? I've been driving around in a VW Touareg V10 TDI for the last few days - if ever there was the definition of 'comedy acceleration' this car is it! No car this big, weighing this much has any right to accelerate like this car does.
I'm not for a minute suggesting it will out do an RS6, but if you want a largish, comfortable crusier for all the family (and it has a decent boot), plus all the toys, then this just might be the answer.
It's a fabulous motorway cruiser (really good ride quality) and the torque from the engine has to be experienced to be believed. You'll never get tired of the looks of surprise on BMW 330D / 530D / big Audi diesels etc driver's faces, when they put their foot down and you're still behind them quite comfortably keeping up It will also return mid-30s mpg at sensible speeds on the motorway.
Have a look on the VW website - there is a big choice. I spotted a 2006 V10 Altitude (top spec version - the one to have) with 19K miles for £37K.

Actually test drove the Toureg a while back albeit the 3.0 tdi. I'll be honest, the car just didn't feel special enough. Wasn't a great spec either, which probably didn't help. Made an offer to the dealer, but my heart wasn't really in it, so the offer was probably laughable, dealer seemed to think so anyway
My plan was to change the X5 for something with a bit more ooomph, I had totally convinced myself that the RS6 was the car. I do like Audi's and was gutted after test driving the RS6, me alone and I would probably have had it, but the wife was there, and no way would she consider putting our daughter in at and using it as a day to day. And let's be honest here, she's the boss
We have just had a Q7 delivered last friday, awesome car, looks great and drives great, real head turner too. Even with the 3.0 TDI engine it actually moves quite well, although not fast by any stretch of the imagination.
Should be picking up a Mk2 Golf GTi 8V in the next few weeks, always wanted one. Hopefully a 355 in the summer if only could sell tht godammed flat

355 - nice! Drove one of these a few weeks back. One of the best modern Ferrari's
Re the Touareg - the V10 is a different beast to the 3 litre! And you really do need the Altitude spec to have all the nice toys
