Back on topic if you go and do some reading or remember the comments we heard at the time of MGR's demise (from anyone other than those thickos at Longbridge who did themselves out of an easy life) the general perception was that MGR failed because it made crap cars (or as I put it, cars for losers). The image of their cars, rightly or wrongly, was in the toilet.

For what it's worth I've driven a 75 (not ZT-T) and thought it was quite an interesting car. Similarly the V6 ZS is a great drivers car like I said at the top of the thread. Doesn't stop the image being the lowest of the low though does it?
It is possibly more correct to say that MG Rover failed because the general perception was that MG Rover made crap cars. Because, lets be honest, with one or two exceptions, they had been making crap cars, badly, for many, many years in various guises under different management regimes.

The unions and the labour party ultimately killed the business, and historically the workers played a major part.

the real irony is that just as MG rover actually started making half decent products it was too late, as not enough people were buying them.

No business can survive having to fund massive stocks that just won't sell.

I'd argue its as much perception of the quality as the image portrayed, but both play a part.

Rabid, I live in Wilmslow and I can state that an X5 doesn't get much in the way of respect, defintely last years news and so common, they are not on the radar anymore, they wont get you noticed, round here it needs to be a Bentley Arnage, Rolls Phantom, Veyron etc etc for anyone to stop and look, unless you have a MG ZT 260 on straight through pipes, people then dont look at the car, they look to the skies wondering where the Spitfire is.

I can sort of see where you are coming from in the loser bit, how owners of german prestige cars will look down on MG/Rovers but they did that before the collapse and they look down on everybody else anyway, they wont look at say a 330i if they are in a 320i, for some its important what badge is on there car, for some its not, in fact some just like to buck the trend and go there own way, in reality, its a car, it transports people and perhaps its not really worth reading that much into it lest we all end up as one of those people who justify their worth by the brand and model number of the car they are driving.

I personally just buy the quickest thing I can get for the cash I have available, that wont break down and will protect my kids in an accident.

That was just a throwaway example but I imagine it's a similar situtation to most places full of posers with stacks of disposable cash. I guess the X5 is a lot more new build housing estate/Harvester type thing for lower middle class people 'going places'. Probably living somewhere like northamptonshire or similar.

The reasons why people choose a particular car aren't what I was commenting on, more the image that car has and why many peple choose to deny it while claiming 'it doesn't matter'.

From my point of view I tend to pick whatever's quick and won't lose me a penny when I get bored and change it shortly afterwards. Image doesn't come into although the lowest depreciators naturally tend to have a respectable image.

Wow you and the people you talk to are really smart.
If any of your friends or family have major heart problems and are offered a place at the centre of excellence for heart conditions and transplants at Queens in Birmingham remember to turn it down, everyone there is really stupid.
Nottingham and Birmingham uni's are two of only five uni's in the UK to have Science City status but again they must have got the awards by default.

You seem to have a big problem with people on this bbs making generalisations about muslims but you are guilty of rubbishing a group of the population yourself.
All midlanders are thick, a bit like me saying all muslims are terrorists.
If you could class midlanders as a race then perhaps you would be classed as a racist.

Cheers

Don't forget the entertaining sources I've read characterising 'miglanders' as stupid sounding too!

I doubt I'll be requiring medical services in the UK, I spend little time there. Oddly enough most University populations are made up of people from outside a given area etc etc.

You can't class 'miglanders' as a race, they don't qualify on all kinds of levels.

Are you perchance one of the stupid sounding tw*ts yourself?

Only kidding!

Probably a bit too northern to be classed as a midlander, but then again I never judge a person by how they speak, how they look or what religion they are.
You should try it, you might meet some interesting people and perhaps a few friends.
