Default Opinions - Mondeo or V70

We currently run a ST24 and a V70 2.5 petrol.
The Volvo does everything we need very well, but averages 26mpg, and is getting to the stage where expensive things may start wearing (136k).

I was thinking of changing it for a Mondeo TDCi 130. haven't driven one yet, but they seem to drive well, do around 45 mpg, and should have lower running costs than the Volvo. They are silly cheap for the year (some loose around 45% in the 1st year), but this means they continue to depreciate quicker than the Volvo would.

We do about 10k a year, and need to tow.

The Mondeo has good safety kit (essential for my family car), and they seem quite solid now, but certainly not as tough as the Volvo.

I could consider a V70 TD, but it would have to be the old shape (only got about £6k to spend).

Has anyone lived with both, or with a Mondeo for a few years of family life? Do they cope well? What's servicing like?
Is there a new model due soon?

For info, I'm going to sell the ST24, and get a 205 for competition use.

The Mk3 Mondeo is a major step up in build and quality from your Mk2 ST24.

The TDCi is not without it's issues but overall it's a solid performer in the latest JD power survey finishing above the 5 series and only 1 position below the Impreza and Passat.

The Mondeo estate has more luggage room than the V70.

As for towing, the ST24 has around 165lbft of torque at a highish 4000rpm. The TDCi 130 has 266lbft at 1800rpm which is nearly bang on 60mph in 5th.

I have a LandRover and a Mondeo TDCi and pull a 1160kg trailer and the Mondeo is the better tow car.
Depending on the trailer you pull you will just have to watch the nose weight as the Mondeo has a 75kg limit.

Servicing is the usuall Ford 12.5k miles or one year and runs at about £130 for a standard service and £200 for a major three year job.
Have a look at http://www.etis.ford.com/fordservice...C633C8.wasv245

Mines now two year old and coming upto 40k miles, it still looks like new inside and out without a squeek or rattle. I've had the pulley rumble and steering creak TSB's done under warranty and that's it.

Have a look over at the diesel section in the forums over on www.fordmondeo.org for more info.

Cheers
Lee

If you can stretch to £8.5k you can take our 2002 D5 Auto.

I have just bought a Mondeo TDCi a couple of weeks ago and so far my review is -

Love it, very torquey, nice n eager to pull no matter what revs your at (runs out of puff a little top end but...) I've done all town work so far n my first tank worked out to 46mpg.

I bought a 4 yr old 130 Ghia X with 71k miles and full service history for £5500. As its the Ghia X it has electric full leather seats etc etc, mine also came with Xenons, sat nav and 6 disk changer.......

Brand new with the extra's mine would have been around the £24k mark, granted only a mug would pay that for a mondeo but shows you how much car you can get for little money!
