I can heartily recommend " The Gruffalo" by Julia Donaldson. It's a little short on content but has a strong, unpredictable plot. My little boy loves it and I must admit it puts a smile on my face too each time.

Hi DK1, for gripping stuff try Touching The Void by Joe Simpson, or John Krakauer's Into Thin Air. Both are mountaineering books that will have you amazed at the risks some people take, you don't have to be into climbing at all to enjoy them.

I've read all four of them,

Da Vinci Code is the best, closely followed by Angels and Demons IMO

The other two are worth a read but in order I would choose Digital Fortress and then Deception Point.

Anyway's I'm currently reading "The increment" by Chris Ryan, have read all his books and now working my way through the series by Andy McNab

Bringing Down The House by Ben Mezrich. A true story about MIT graduates who take Vegas for millions at blackjack. About card counting and some very intelligent people using their intelligence to beat the system.

Breaking Vegas by Ben Mezrich again. Another true story of MIT graduates who come up with a completely new system that isn't card counting and not only take Vegas but many places in the States, in London and Monte Carlo!!

Both an easy read but i couldnt put them down

But my favorite was Ugly Americans by Mezrich again. True story about an American lad who goes to Japan and plays the Nikkei stock market. Betting stupid amounts of money ( into the billions at one time ). At the same time Nick Leeson lost everything for Barings! Also includes the Yakuza (jap mafia) and an insight into the darkside of Japan. A fantastic read that i've read 3 time's in a year!!!!!

gav..

I have it and tried it but it was very hard going as was Ulysees.

I've read LoTR many times, maybe as many as 12 now - fantastic trilogy, all 1,075 pages of it.

Anything by Matthew Reilly is a muster but you won't get much sleep at bedtime.

Stephen Donaldson would be a good choice too if just to improve your vocabulary.

yes many times. if you are interested in how tolkiens books came into being then i would suggest you start the History of Middle Earth seires. very heavy going, no story line but give a great insight into how his story unfolds. the silmarillion was actually tolkien's first love, and if you read his biography by tom shippey you will find that he spent the better part of his life writing and redrafting parts of it. the silmarillion is also a hard read. too many names but the stories are great. it's my favourite tolkien book.

i am currently reading Trace by patricia cornwell. another scarpetta novel.

Thought I would get a few opinions on it as I have been told it's rubbish!

But I'm enjoyinh the LoTR trilogy that much that it's got to be worth a try, I have wondered about the history of middle earth as they are named in LoTR, would be very interesting how he thought of it all and put it into an amazing trilogy.

Grumpy Old Men. Helps take the sting out of the boredom on the train into the smoke.

Have recently done:

- Men from Mars, Women from Venus.
- Wilt, Indecent Exposure, Ancestral Vices, Riotous Assembly (all byTom Sharpe, amazingly witty and incisive)

Started Spy Catcher recently (an old tome re the Cold War spies, ie Blunt, etc). Put it back down as too heavy for the morning run.
