Autocar Twin Test Wrx vs VXR October '05
Has anyone on this thread read the test in Autocar ??
Basically in summary it says there is little to choose between the cars in outright performance but to quote "Throw it into corners and though it rolls more the WRX's pace is on another level"
I have no doubt the Astra is a quick powerful car and I like its looks, but from what they are saying it is hard work to extract that performance.
I can't comment as I havent driven a VXR but Autocar have tested them back to back, and all I can say is that they test a lot of cars so they might be quite good at it ... or not as the case may be !!
The VXR may be quicker around the ring driven by a professional but most people would probably be able to get more out of the WRX IMO.

like i said before disregard any previous tests carried out by the press,
all where done with pre production cars and this one you have mentioned was riding on 19's and cdc, both dont give a good stable controlled ride on UK B-roads as does the standard 18's and lotus developed passive suspension, the 19's are great for track and motorway and have the looks but on your typical twisty b-roads they tend to bounce than grip, the cdc german suspension also becomes to firm and causes the VXR to again bounce rather than soak up hence the reason Lotus was called in to develop the chassie/suspension and recommend the 18's for UK spec which is best for handling and ride. The pre production models also were set up with a different map to our cars which have also been tweaked more so, this map also includes a change in the steering map and having backed to back a pre and production models there is a considerable difference in perfomance ride and handling, as we speak the pre prodiction models are being scrapped and 2 have been given to VXR tuners for tuning devolopment, many auto mags are retesting the VXR but this time in production form and long term testing so expect to see the VXR pop up again in group testing in the not to distant future.
The pre prod model and prod model really do feel like different cars.

Dear me boys
Go away for a day and 8 pages!!
I confess to being a VXR owner, but with 9 Scoobies under my belt plus a few other cars I'd like to add my input
Apart from the inital 0-30 in the damp/wet, the VXR loses nothing to most of the Scoobies Ive owned. In the twisties I'm as quick in the VXR as any Scooby (please read evo when they tested identical models save the 4wd and in the twisties actually found the non 4wd car quicker
The VXR is a quick car and the chassis guys in UK format have got the car to feel like it pivots on the gearstick. Usually I'd say that was crap, but it isnt.
If vauxhall could change anything, it should be their PR department and the people that released the cars to the press. Basic schoolboy errors were made. Cars released with the wrong suspension, German set up etc.
Ive driven one of these badly set up cars and I understand why they got slated in the press, in comparison to my car it felt horrible. In fact it felt like the car had 100,000 miles on the clock not 7,000.
Can they deal with over 240bhp. I have to say in the past I would of said NO, but the VXR seems able to cope. Ive driven a car with at least 280bhp and it was a nice easy car to drive. Didnt sound as good as a Scooby, but it did pop at you when you came off the gas.
The VXR is easily the match of a std Scooby. Not sure it could cope against a well set up STI though, but at least the interior feels a touch nicer

Not what Ive read. I heard its the same engine as in the old astra coupe.
The focus ST. Perfect balance between the golf GTI and the VXR. Although the GTI will be worth twice as much as the vxr or ST ina bout 2-3 years.
Plus the new type r is out soon as is the new leon cupra r, new s3 and revised golf gti, new clio 197 and 207gti.
