205 gti
I've always keep looking back at the ol' pug, but I worry about buying a high millage french car, especially a model that is guaranteed to have been thrashed for most if not all of ti's life!

Get one thats sound body wise, then just change the parts that need doing. Pick up a dirt cheap one for a few hundred quid and get reconned parts. Depreciation alone on just one of my Imprezas would have seen me with the most minted ever 205!

I'll let you know next week how excited i am when I pick the car up. Reconditioned mi16 engine with twin weber carbs and 306 gti brakes. Should hopefully see circa 180 bhp in something that weighs very little. Cheap honest fun, no ASBO needed!

LOL AP seems a bit of a fanatic with the pug cars! I know what you mean by day to day driving. Drove the thing yesterday and it was louder (in cabin) than a decat with blitz nur spec I swear!

I think tuned cars are only not reliable if there are not built right, before I got my pug I was running a tuned Mini every day and ran like clockwork.

I think your comment regarding modded cars can equally be applied to any
*really* modified car ... they do have a tendency to be tempremental. I have
personally been really surprised at how reliable these 205 things are.
Scoobynutter555 could you mail me Jonny205 address, have heard his name before, I live in M.Keynes not far from Bicester, would be interested in his contact details if my 205 requires any work.Do you know if he is good at suspension set up?
Does he have a rolling road? Could do with mine being checked over and tuned.
I do not know of any other 205 Specialist in this area.
Cheers

Have a look on
www.jonniewigmore.co.uk
It's the same guy. Think he's quite proficient in all things 205.

1.9 Gti's are very good cars, so what if they have been thrashed, as long as the body is straight the engine/mechanical gear can all be re-built.
You could probably do quite a respectable engine build for the cost of a couple or three weekends fuel for the Scoob.
Had two pre-cat 1.9's and loved em both, no problems at all & sold each of them for quite a penny.

406 Saloon calipers will NOT fit directly onto a 205/309/306 hub - The offset of yoke/carrier is different to a GTi-6.
The claw itself is the same (57mm piston), but you need to then get the yokes/carriers which only come from Pug and are a fortune. Claws are actually 'slightly' diff., but they are interchangeable.
The Brembos calipers from the 406 Coupe WILL fit a 205/309/306 hub and will bolt-up directly with a 206 GTi 180 or 307 HDi disc. However, they are huuuugggee, and not particularly light. Bigger wheels are not a necessity but a different style (from 1.9 alloys) certainly are. I wonder how everyone on 205Drivers knows this....
Best bet is to get the calipers/discs from a 307 HDi (anything bar 1.4 in reality). This will give discs which are 2mm larger than a 306 GTi-6, but are 4mm thicker. They also have a smaller piston + therefore no need to change the master cylinder to maintain a good pedal.
I'm on my 4th now a Mi16, its a daily driver now driven 25k since conversion, sweet as a nut. Only had 2 small issues, alternator failed and a small rubber cover split, total cost £12.
Have upgraded brakes to 307 ones, bargain at just over a ton for virtually brand new brakes, the standard 1.9 brakes are dearer. They make a big difference.
Only other expense is 4 new tyres Toyo T1-Rs, £30 each and oil/sundries.
They are crude and noisy, but I have a W800i which stops that now!
Wife has new cars, they see the garage more often
I get 35mpg, insurance is peanuts, car tax costs more and have never lost money on deprecation.
Great fun on road and track, take it at least once a year and the Ring also this year, always turn the key starts first time no complaints
So much fun, just bought another Mi with every single option fitted apart from heated seats for not a lot.
They come highly recommended for honest cheap fun, just don't mention safety features

I remember someone on the 205gtidrivers forum rolled their 205 Turbo Technics, and without the cage it wouldve been a certain fatality.
Rolled one myself (only lightly), but it was surprising how easily the windscreen pillars bent in, and had it been a heavier roll then damage wouldve been significant.
Had a head on in my old one and even with the roof buckled the passenger compartment was barely touched. They aren't as bad as they are made out, but I guess it depends on the type of crash.....

He's told me the bonnet won't shut fully with the carbs fitted and I had to source an auto bonnet as apparently they have bulge in bonnet. Luckily theres a French car specialist salvage place near me and Ive located and bought one for 30 quid, in the right colour too!
Should be next week til I get it back!
