Cool 205 gti

Just won a 205 gti 1.9 on fleabay and will be picking it up at the weekend. From the pics/description looks a clean car. Proof will be in the pudding though when I turn up with a reassuringly small bundle of cash Have joined the AA in anticipation. I've never even been in a 205 so don't know what to expect. Had a fiesta turbo for about 5 years, so i assume it will be sort of similar to that.

Can't wait for a little track time!

Excellent. So, tell us about the car.....

Pug's were born to be used on track, superb cars (all biased aside of course).

900 quid, 8 month MOT highish miles, J reg.Only mod is a mongoose exhaust which Ive seen for over 300 quid new. There's a few 205s hovvering around the 2k mark on fleabay. Its sold as in good condition with no rust, but I expect to spend a few quid on it. Some of the prices for them in the trader etc, 4-5k!!!!!! Prices for parts on Fleabay are dirt cheap, 20 quid for a set of alloys with decent tyres

The valve stem seals I assume need replacing as it apparently smokes a small amount upon starting. Less than 500 quid Id imagine to put this right?

Prices of these cars seem to be going up, not down which is a little weird!

More than likely the stem seals, easy to fix. It doesn't *need* doing but I didn't like the smoke, made it look like your car was fecked! As for price - cost me 150 from my chap who can do it without removing the head. If they remove the head to do it think more like double that.......

Good buy mate! Just got rid of a mint Miami blue J reg 1900cc on flea bay!

Bought it for £1900, used it for 12 months (8,000 miles) and sold it for £2050 on Ebay!!!

Sure you'll have fun! Just don't let off when you commit to a corner!!!!!!

Nutty little motors, crazy throttle response but a little breathless at higher revs.
Unless you know what to do with lift off oversteer never snap off the throttle mid bend!

Other than that they are nimble and revvy with loads of feedback and love the twisties!

Ill have to see how bad it is, if its just a little smokey on start I can live with that. If not, then Ill have to get in touch with your bloke, whereabouts is he?

A blue one I was watching on fleabay just went for 2,450 *low* miles on a K.

Amazed that for a price of a major service on my old car I can pick one of these things up.

Would the valve stem seals cause you to loose some oil pressure too?

It would be negligable - between having mine on their way out and then replaced, I hardly noticed any difference..........

Think it may be time to get pics together of all the 205's on Scoobynet, especially as mine will be finished (finally) this weekend.

I'll start a gallery thread when mine finally works.

Welcome to the 205 club btw, you'll love it

I had some replaced on a 1.6GTi I had and oil pressure was definately higher after they were replaced, but not by a lot.

Have fun with the car scoobynutta - you cant have much more fun than a blast on a country road in a 205 1.9GTi!!

One thing I would recommend however is that you splash out on new plugs and leads (decent ones), maybe an induction kit if it doesnt already have one, a bottle of injection cleaner (use the tank of fuel you add it to) - then take the car to get the timing etc properly setup at a garage with a Bosch diagnostics rig.

Only used to cost me about 40quid, and the results were ALWAYS stunning. Used to collect the car from the garage and be amazed how much sharper the throttle response was, and acceleration was always stronger.

I run one as a track car. I've done well over 15 track days this year and its cost me less to maintain than a cambelt and full service on the scoob!!!

All my gauges work too

That oil pressure looks fine for idle, should go just above half when driving

picked it up today. reams of paperwork, service stamps, old mots, no rust anywhere, shiney as a shiney thing. New tyres, clutch, service, even a spare gearbox in the boot! Drove the car 60 miles today, guages etc still work!

Found the gear throw a bit long, especially in R. Brakes not what I'm used to, think i'll upgrade. ******* fantastic car for the money, I'm very very impressed with it, unbeatable value!

manual switch for the fan control, this better than auto control ?

buy yourself a griffiths engineering quickshift kit for it, excellent bit of kit and cheap too, the standard stuff is a waste of time

I converted mine to manual when the auto control packed up (cheaper option). Makes no difference really, just means that you have to watch the temp gauge and if it gets to 3/4 in traffic (which it will) you have to manually switch the fans on. Also means you've got more control over the fans which I like

Glad to hear you like the car Pop over to 205gtidrivers.com and say hello, they're a friendly bunch

Yup - I have the adjustable one and its ace - its like rowing a boat as standard

DS2500 pads go a long way to helping re the brakes, failing that the GTi-6 brake upgrade is superb
