I'm not defending the R32 here at all, for all I know it might be alot slower than your motor but I will say this :-

1) How do you know he was trying ?
2) How do you know he didnt **** up a gear ?
3) How do you know he wasn't wearing sandals ?

The best way to ensure a proper fair tete a tete is to have someone you know driving the other car, then at least you know you are both trying to achieve the same thing........then the 2 drivers swap cars and see if there is a big difference....it might just show that one driver is generally better at changing gear, braver in sweeping bends etc......

Playing against unknown drivers doesn't prove alot..........

He could have a twin engined NOS nutter machine and if the driver only wanted to do 40, or fluffed every gear change cos his box was buggered, you could make him look slow.

Had a play with one in my 279bhp(RollingRoaded) WRX RA, I pulled away say half a car length every second, he was indeed trying. I used to own a Mk4 GTi as a company car, felt very heavy, I suspect the R32 feels similar..

If thats aimed at me?

1) Coz he was driving like an a$$, zooming up my ***, backing off, zooming up etc when I was doing the speed limit, weaving about etc - not many people drive like that if they aren't trying to entice something
2) If he fooked a gear he did it every single time we pulled away
3) You could be right - he did look very ghei

I do agree, but if he only wanted to do 40, he wouldn't have been driving in the agressive manner he was and breaking the speed limit to do so

However - looking back at the specs of it - its one lard *** of a car @ 1512kg, I only have 197bhp and 195lb/ft on tap (for the moment), but over 200kg lighter. So it should be fairly similar - I do love it though as he really wasn't a happy chap, and it cost a fraction of his

I would disagree with the Chav Chariot bit.

IMO the R32 doesn`t have any better an image than the Scoob, as, after all, it`s only a Golf anyway.

How many of those are driven by Chavs these days ?

R32 - nice car

Subaru Impreza - drivers car

R32 is too heavy and its clever 4WD system isn't as good for true rallying as permenant AWD you get from a subaru impreza. I Own a P1 and have been considering an R32. Been out in a couple and they feel slow compared to the vivid turbo acceleration feel of the scoob. To swap it would be a compromise.

R32 - Nice cruiser, nice interior, good to look at, but to drive there is no competition.

If you've got a standard wrexy then slam it on some tein suspension, get it mapped to 300 brake, strut braces all round and the R32 will seem like a distant memory almost forgotten.

I had one of the first R32's and it was bloody slow, nothing like the 'image' that VW had attached to the car.

Overpriced and overweight IMHO. They should have come with the 280ish bhp that a chipped one gets and then it would've been a reasonable starting point....

My points weren't aimed directly at anyone m8, I was just pointing out that it can be hard to be sure of a fair comparison when u dont have the account of the encounter from the other guy. Anyway from what you've said in your reply, it sounds like he was indeed trying......loved to have seen the look on his face....he prolly looked like he had swallowed a couple of wasps

I own an STi PPP but tend to agree.

I nearly bought an R32 before I got the Scoob - trouble was tracking one down when they first came out. I know the R32 wouldn't have been as quick or 'handled in the twistys' blah blah. BUT build quality etc shouldn't be under estimated.

Also.....residuals - haven't checked lately but I think financially I'd be in a better position now if I'd gone for the R32.
