Try reading the avenger by FredericK Forsyth, it'll keep you rivetted to the book, you wont be able to put it down, no big words either.....

I disagree about the da vinci code. It's one of the best page turners I've read, and even my old man is reading it now...and he's read about 2 novels in the past 40 years! Agree with you about Catcher in the Rye though, I enjoyed it but it's definitely not the sort of book I would suggest for someone's first foray into literature for years.

I'm surprised no one has suggested Catch 22 (for a joke)

Jean Michel Houellebecq is also very entertaining. "Atomised" I couldn't put down, but you might get some funny looks reading it on the train. "Whatever" is much shorter for those with a brief attention span.

Angels & Demons by Dan Brown is also a good page turner.

I also read a superb book about glue - I couldn't put it down

Definately read this!!!

I frickin hate Catcher in the Rye - absolute ****e!
Couldn't agree more on both counts!

Catcher is the most overrated book of all fecking time!
The dog in the nightime is very good though.

Another vote for Terry Pratchett as a simple easygoing short read.

Or on a different tack, try The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller. Possibly the best graphic novel ever written.

Clive Cussler books are good sort of James Bond at sea novels.....EG. Raise the Titanic. Far fetched but fun.
Also its going back a bit and maybe they're a bit old fashioned but Neville Shute wrote some good ones too.
Jack Higgins is good for a bit of derring do!
And Hammond Innes is in the same league.
Good on ya for giving whatever you read a go. Its always better than the screen.....you can make the subjects exactly what you want them to be and lose yourself.ENJOY !
