Mark A's project
Oh no...
Putting my sensible hat on:
I need the box first so i can run slicks; you know that makes sense Mark.
The 2.5 is next.
Having looked for a legacy 2.2 CDB they are rare in UK and USA (Ebay), and I think the 2.5 is the best option especially the Axis with forged pistons. Not sure its worth having the rods.
The 2.5 can run on my 20g well and can then step up to a twisted GT30 for that little 'extra' to go EVO hunting.
If my bonus happens then this is the plan.
Difficult to get a bonus working in manufacturing in the West Midlands..
Graham.

What about Crawford engines aswell

Well finally got back to doing some work on the car.
Fitted the turbo about 5 times (can't imagine trying to do it with the engine in the car), now finally in place but a little concerned as the inlet pipe (home made stainless steel item) i have won't fit.
Turbo inlet seems very close to the inlet manifold. I need some help, direction here.

I'm missing the oil feed union bolt
Started fitting the injectors and fuel rails, including some stainless steel hoses.

Nearly ready to put back in the car

Need a couple of little bits this week to finish off

Anybody know if you can buy a bracket to fit the top of the PS pump, so I can mount the PS tank remotely?

Fit that inlet pipe before the motor goes back in, a real pain to fit when it is in place, and yes, fitting the turbo while the engine is in the car is nearly as bad as the gearbox removal 'Opera' ......

I bought some Millers CRX 80/140 from Alyn at ASP Performance for my 6 speed, along with some Motul 15/50 300V for a very reasonable price
Mark, you can buy the PS pump take off from your local Subaru dealership, taken from a thread on 22b:

My stock V3 inlet pipe ripped where it passes over the turbo inlet ring, so I was forced to fit a 'custom' samco part which was a few mm larger in diameter for the 20g ring diameter.
The fit to the turbo is very restricted when the engine is in the car and the 3 wall Samco is very reluctant to slip/slide over the ring.
It drives me mad prising and squeezing the samco on, and in hindsight, you should have installed the turbo first, inlet pipe and then the manifold on top, (no critisim intended, just wished I had at the time)
The run of the Samco to the turbo inlet was a good deal straighter than yours appears in the photo and the samco was far from being a straight tube.
I got it from Roger Clarke and it was VERY expensive,(about £200) but right for the job.
There are pics in my engine thread.

From: All over the place, trying to stop putting the miles on!
Tim is that list model dependant or does it bolt onto any MY of PS pump.
I assume this arrangement is standard in the newer cars?
Dan.

As far as I know Danny the tale off plate will fit any model year power steering pump housing.
Personally I would buy just the take off plate and make the rest of the kit up myself. For instance IIRC Harvey found that the power steering resovoir from an Astra was ideal!

How about no mechanical power steering pump? Good idea 114!
I read about a chap who used a Merc A class electric pump instead. It is an all-in-one unit (motor/pump and res) so put somewhere convenient and save space as well as drag on the engine! He paid £50 for his and it was speed sensitive although he only used the +ve, earth and ign. lead to run it.

I saw and raced against a 4 x 4 Cossie V6 fully stripped to the bare bone that saved weight by using a Peugot 106 electric pump assy (I think) that mounted at the bottom of the steering column just under the dash (if it had one).
It was quite a size mind, but saved power more than weight.

I think I'll take you advice Graham, remove the inlet and "adapt" the inlet pipe with a large hammer and heat if needed.
20 quid for a bracket/take off pipe is taking the ****, I'll make one

Pat had some take off plates made up a while back, I've used one of those to make up my remote resovoir kit...
Ron, Adam had a 106 electric pump on his car, but he didn't like the artificial way it loaded up (and blew fuses) the assistance, it seemed to add a degree of inertness to the steering feel I think he said...I believe that he's now returning to the mechanical pump
Floyd, I take it you've not driven an Impreza without the power steering pump operating...it's most unpleasent around town
Also it's not a good idea to run a power assisted rack without assistance...

Tim, I meant to use the Merc pump, not have no assistance at all
The idea with the Merc pump is that it has a speed sensitive mode should you wish to use it that may overcome Adam's problem...
Graham, just a guess - 10bhp??? plus increased rev's speed??

I know its abit late... but I would be very interested in a group buy on Stage 3 Axis Motor...
I drop my engine off with Teg sport on the 10th Feb to start the rebuild... but if the price was right, I'd be willing to wait a few more weeks for it...
Teg sport quoted me for the same spec block fitted to my heads for £2400ish...

well it's been a while but finally got over to the car.
Started by finishing fitting the fuel pipes and injectors. My main concern is the inlet I'd planned to use just won't fit, as you can see from the picture it needs at least 1 cm lateral movement. I may speak with the Ellis & Co and get them to fabricate a new alloy one.

The other problem is getting the engine and gearbox to mate up. Two of us spent 2 hours moving it backwards and forwards. I ended up taking off the Gruppe-S headers to make more space at the front.
Do I need to remove the engine mounts?
Does the clutch have to have some funny positioing like the 5 speed?
Currently the engine mounts are attached to the engine. I have now jacked the Gbox up a couple of centimeters which has helped. The old 5 speed had much more movement, but still it refuses to come together.

Any suggestions or if somebody could post up the correct fitting proceedure for a 2.5 to a 6 speed then I'd appreciate it. It would save me some time.
I've had to adjust the bell housing to allow clearance with the TD05 20g.
I shall return to the car tomorrow to continue and hopefully get the engine back in and then work on tidying up the wiring etc.
I'm back to work next week but then got another 2 weeks to finish this!
A massive thank you to Andy F for supplying a missing oil feed union & API who I rang in the afternoon and by the next morning had sent me a set of clutch plate bolts. I owe you both a beer
Regards Mark
