WRXRich:
Those are the clamps in the Hybrid kit!
It is very hard to know when the clamp is tight enough.
I sheared one bolt doing it up during assembly, so probably was a bit light on subsequent clamps.

According to Andy's sat-nav, he was to get home at 00.45am wed, so his car is still cooling down as I type this!

Not looking forward to taking that bumper off again....
Still, nearly all done. I've put my first set of 'race' numbers on the magnetic panels ready for 2 weeks away and the first blast...to get the AST's sorted which felt surprisingly good on their base settings.

Yes, home now

Good to meet you guys again and Ian for the first time (is he on the tuning slippy slope now )

No problem with the minor hiccups during the day, I'm used to it....I only ever work on Subarus

Looking forward to how you find the car performing on the events Graham, it certainly has a very wide power band now

Thanks again for your hospitality on the day and your sterling work as a back seat driver

Must have been in the mood to sort the pipe out tonight as i stripped the bumper etc off and down to the pipes to and from the FMIC.
The one that blew off was from the turbo and i found out why it did..

The pipe was hard against the front slam panel and when i first installed it I pushed that pipe hard to the IC but the pipe was up against the panel stopping it fully engaging with the samco, or at least not enough to allow the clamp to do its job.

Took both sides off, roughed up the tubes with production paper, cleaned everything with thinners, liberal coating of 'Firm Hold' (!) hair spray and the hose slipped on into place as if it were greased.
Replaced the de-greased clamps and screwed all tight.
I had marked the pipes where the samco should locate to enable me to be sure i had full engagement when done.

I then cut that poor bumper further underneath so if a hose dared to blow at a hill climb I could get to it pdq to save the day.

The bumper fits better now than before, and in 3 hours all was done and ready to run this friday afternoon.

All that hair spray will be dried and set and we will see if it can handle 1.5 bar this time

Moral of this silly story:

Don't rush the Job!

Knackered now..
Graham.

ps: I now know why David at API likes this hair spray stuff, the smell reminds him of his first girlfriend!
My (older) sister used the stuff after all that back combing.....(you need to be this old to know what i'm talking about)

You sure you and her are blood related Graham??

"(actually, she was quite a looker way back then)"

Or do you just take after the other side of the family?

Glad to hear things went not too badly with Andy and its good to hear the cars ready for action. Apart from setting up those damn sexy shocks of yours!!!

the Hybrid clamps certainly are not Mikalor G, similar style but the through bolts bend too easily when you wind em down.
I had a blow off at high speed the other day, nearly filled my strides with the noise and smoke, thought I had **** the bottom end.
worked my confidence back up to 1.05 bar and will be trying 1.3 and 1.65 at Goodwood this weekend, GULP

Peanuts:
You are right.
I looked carefully last night during the 're-clamp'. Same style but...

On the first install I sheared a bolt due to strain of the torque and the bending on the bolt as you get to the final pinch.

I am sure the IC hoses are tight now, but... a set of the Mickalor clamps could be a good exercise..or do as Gerry did and replace the bolts with stainless items.
Will give the car a full run over the weekend at full tilt and wait for something to go pop.

They are nothing like the same style as the mikalors.. We did a group buy for mikalors and the average car ended up with around £50 in clamps iirc..

Where from David please? Now the front bumper is half the weight it used to be now I've finished cutting, I can change the clamps with the bumper on.

I feel an email looming..
Thanks Tim.

On another track:

How/where do you get into the fan loom to fit a manual override so I can switch them on full blast before a run?
Diagram would be very nice please.

Graham, run a wire to the ecu, pull the pin low and it will turn the fan on

Found it.
Thanks!
David, understand, but isn't there a simpler way, ie 'hot wire' it?
Don't like the idea of going near the ecu....
(sorry, I'm a mechanical guy)

sounds good graham, what bhp and torque do you reckon its running? are you going to have a power run on the rollers?

This may be rather simplistic but doesn't the a/c switch tell the ecu to run the fans? You've removed the mechanical bits but does the ecu actually know that? If it does work, then the idle RPM will increase but shouldn't be a problem on the start line and it can be adjusted on the hand commander anyway.

James:

The power band is so wide now it hurts.
I never got 1.5 bar last time, and peak boost last time was never as low as 3800rpm.
I cannot tell any extra lag, thought the 20g on a 2 litre can be laggy if you let it fall off boost.
The engine feels like it wants to pull and pull so much longer than the engine last year.

I can only put this down to the better breathing and the prolonged cooling of the FMIC.
During mapping the fuel gauge moved as fast as the tacho

The car is so much stronger feeling.
Bet it's pouring by you too. i was hoping to go out for some full-on blasts to check if the hoses will stay put, but too wet. I get fed-up cleaning the suspension!

Next weekend is the practice weekend at Loton Park hill climb, running on the sunday, so that will be the first challenge.
I hope to have some video on the runs too, we'll see.

At a guess, I have the same bhp but more torque over a wider band = faster to chase that bloody EVO who is sure to have been tinkering over the winter, I'm expecting a 2.2 and maybe slicks if he has found a gearbox.

Jerry, never thought of using the A/C switch to trigger the fans. As it stands now, the a/c light does not come on at all, so i guess it is all 'dead' to the ecu.

you, probably, have already answer to this question but in your class you can run with slicks? I thought that would be another class...

don't forget the vids.

Any tyre type is legal in my class, but I think slicks and this engine will kill the transmission..
Maybe next year!

As I understand it, ALL Japanese cars run the air con pump when you engage reverse. It's their way of making sure that the pump gets a run and lubricates itself during the winter.

The Air con will not engage in normal use unless the LP pressure switch is made on the refrigerant line. This is a safety mechanism to ensure the pump doesn't run without refrigerant in the system.

God, this monster thread has some variety in it!
I've passed on the manual fan idea as i don't think any usefull air will be pulled through the FMIC when switched on.

Can't wait to give it death on Sunday...hope it is dry, but it has been known to snow too at the top of the hill where the fastest part of the track is.....
