Depending on the engine spec, but I ran mine with a TD05 20g (bloody huge) and when installed, it looked standard.
I kept the panel filter too, and the car ran 407 bhp with that, so panel filters are ok!

The Apexi is about £700 in the UK , bit a good piece of kit.

Im sure thats the reason why most people document their projects like this online, in the hope that someone else will find it useful and not make the same cockups that we made.
Took me ages to get round to doing my projects thread but im glad its all up there, is a good reference for the future too to see just what i did to it!

I never thought this thread would be of much interest to so many, let alone run for so long!

It seems such a simple string of mods to do looking back, and the 'masters' of modding Impreza's might have laughed but they have supported the effort so well.

The more Projects are aired the better, and the bits of 'off topic' banter are all part of that.

A very big bar room meeting at times!

Inspiration really came from Carl Davey and Flat 4 who are report masters

Graham.

Today they feel a bit basic, but I've learnt so much off the Snet from the wizz kids on here.
I feel totaly confident to do a 2.33 or a good 2.5 with the 20g as a first stage.

A good gearbox must be the next thing for Xmas, and that has to be a Zen PPG with Type R ratio's and a UK 5th to keep my brain from buzzing on the motorways.(and Avon slicks too!)

Maybe then that EVO will be mine!

Graham (must focus on the suspension)

Day dreaming about the 20g:

I think the 20g is a plain bearing turbo?
Would a Ball Bearing 'conversion' be worth much in the lag/spool-up area?

With the FMIC; the air path from the cold side to the FMIC is hampered by a series of bends, all of which will restrict the flow.

On Fuzz's turbo (not a 20g?) he rotated the cold side to allow the outlet to point towards the suspension turret and hence directly at the pipe to the FMIC core through the wing. He welded very neatly a boss to screw the actuator to afterwards.

As Andy F would say, you do all the little things and the overall effect can be Big (but in strange Scottish).

Any thoughts on the above?

Graham

Many a mickle makes a muckle?

20g is a sleeve bearing, rollar bearing turbos are a bit more modern and will react a little faster, but they generally aren't as robust as the Sleeve bearing ones...unless you're talking about the big Garrett GT series that is

Not it's not, its just like mine, all mine I say!

But seriously it does remove a fair length of pipework and possibly more importantly around 270deg of bends in the narrowest section of pipework.

I did it when I modified my TD05-16G to a 18G so I cannot directly compare the change with the same turbo.

The 18G cover is a similar diameter to the 20G and to rotate it fully needed some attention to the crankcase breather pipework, PS pipes and turbo coolant supply, but I did not have to raise the turbo from it's normal location as Andy (Fuzz) did.

Is the 18g the same as the 20g on the cold side anyone?

Graham,

The 18G is the same 'family' of wheels as the 20G, it has the same inducer but a shallower exducer so ultimately can't flow as much air.

IMHO it's a better match for a TD05H hotside than the 20G which can't be used to it's full potential.

Andrew - You have that the wrong way round - the inducer is smaller on the 18G, the inducer also plays the larger part in regards to max airflow.

Yes, thats correct. Other manufacturers would call the 18G and 20G a different trim version of the same wheel. The 20G works well with the different airflow characteristics of the Sti cams. It can surge a bit on the lower duration/overlap UK cams on some cars and hence the 18G can give better results.

Is there room to rotate the 20g cold side 180 degs?
Has anyone actually 'rotated' the 20g on a 2 litre (like you see the GT30's etc on the high end motors?) and is it worth the bother?
Graham.
