Steve:
The 20g is a 'bit' laggy on the 2 Litre, but will be great on the 2.5 as there is so much more gas flow/stroke.
I need a very torquey/drivable engine rather than 500+ at a flick of a switch.

Ron: Antilag is allowed. My Apexi wont do it, but the bang..bang..bang on the track from it is very much objected to as the noise issue of hill climbs in rural England is a very real problem (as in closing tracks down) so very unpopular mod.

The 20g is easy to handle if you keep it all above 4500 but sometimes I miss the boost edge and loose valuable tenths of a second while the engine spools-up.
Hill climbing is a very 'sudden death' sport. I have lost 1st in class by 1/100 second several times due to a fluffed gearchange.

Graham.

i would speak to john banks about 20g on a standard 2.5ltr before you decide thats your way to go as once you over step a boost figure its a guaranteed gasket blower

The 20g is easy to handle if you keep it all above 4500 but sometimes I miss the boost edge
i cant understand how at those revs you loose time as when i had my TMIC fitted imade full boost by about 3400rpm by your revs my car would be flying

Exactly; the car is fully on the boil!
iirc my 2 Litre is at 1.2 boost at about 3700/4000 and 1.4+ at 4500.
If I try to leave a hillclimb tight bend at 4000 the car will 'lag' before it picks-up, feels like a year long but is onlt a second or 2 but that is enough to loose the class position and it is very hard to make up the time lost after in the rest of the run!
Some hill climbs take about 33 seconds and most about 50/60 seconds.

I thought JB said recently that a 2.5 on a 20g with moderation on the boost (about 1.3/1.4) makes for a great road driving engine?(stock Cometic gaskets)

I feel slightly nervous!

With the roads dry here for the first time in weeks, thought i would take the Sti out for a run.
Started ok, and ran on 3 pots for ages. As it warmed it ran on all 4 pots.
Could be sparks or a sticky injector?
Disturbed none of these areas when doing the engine mounts etc so any ideas?
Anyway, on 4 cylinders went round the estate. God the thing is fast when you haven't driven it for ages! The sports cat doesn't seem to have affected it much

Hope the run will have sorted the fault. There was no CEL while it ran on 3 so ?
The hard mounts don't seem noticeable, the rock hard ride is!

Don't you just love tuned Imprezas?

Graham.

Sounds more likely just a fouled plug. If it has been started/stopped a few times in the garage without seeing load then the colder plugs can struggle to get up to 'burn off' temp and the insulators start to carbon up.
If it does it next cold start I'd try a new set of plugs.

Thanks Andy, it has been short-run several times.
Embarrassed to say the plugs are the ORIGINALS from 1996..

What plugs would you say for new ones bearing the state of tune?

Well.............
The car had 16K miles on it from Japan.
I've run it for 3 years @ 3K / year, so lets say 26K miles.
It has never run on 3 pots ever before.

My Yaris is at 52 K miles and has never had it's plugs out of the head (it is a perfect car), and my 911 (Bosche 1986 ecu) ran original plugs and dizzy cap for 10 years in the transplant engine, but were perfect when I took them out. I used to change such things every 6 months in my 2.4 911 mechanical fuel injection engine just to keep it going on 6 pots.

Thanks for the advice Andy, just need to find some!
Graham.

I was going to change my plugs at 10k miles but seeing as you're getting gazzilions from yours I may leave mine in a while longer

Knowing these sprint and uphill merchants less than 5 miles since 1996

To slightly contradict Andy, for the purposes of keeping it clear during the off season and for short runs use PFR6B - BUT for hard work a new set of PFR7B's is correct.

I know the expense of 2 NEW sets of plugs

is a killer, but I think you'll notice the difference.

Yep, hill climbers do it quicker than anyone else!

2 sets to buy is not the problem, it's rembering which set are in there (at my age).
Thanks everyone, but if the engine starts on 4 on saturday, can i leave them in for another 26K miles?

If they've been in there since '96 then I doubt they'll come out anyway

No!
Wired the threads nad brake cleaner on the electrodes, cleaned (?) the gap using folded paper!
Not sure if the tips were plated and didn't want to damage the plating.
I last did them after all the engine mods last Xmas and before the mapping session.

I lost the platinum tips off the electrode on two of the NGKs that were in the my car when I bought it.

Ran fine though.

Perhaps one day in the far future, the engine will get stripped to find two small peices of platinum tip embeded in the valve seats

(and last time I checked Showells was "down the Lye" Since when did the Dudley borough become part of Wolverhampton? )

Did the stiffer mounts stop any engine rocking Graham?

Bob:
Yes. Lumpy tickover on 3 pots was 'shaking' the body quite a lot.
When i was on all 4 again, took the car round the estate to clear its throat and the engine/gearshift is much improved, the gear lever seems to be stationary in comparison, no shaking about.
Harshness seems unchanged to be honest. Well pleased for £170.

Good mod for those 10 second runs next year

Graham.

Cool

Fired the car up today, and it burst into life on 4 pots, so (again) AndyF is right.
I think i'll fit a fresh set of plugs to avoid David at API taking the micky out of me and because I'm bored!
Every Xmas as long as I can remember I've worked hard on the 911 or the Impreza, but both cars are 'on the button' and could race tomorrow if called for.
Had a surprise when i rolled the car back to run the engine to find 2 smallish pools of water on the floor..
I thought the bloody turbo water hose had sprung a leak, so up the car went and after a search underneath there was nothing. Turns out that because of the short runs on the engine recently, the water from the exhaust had condensed in the bottom of the Down Pipe/centre section joint and had leaked onto the garage floor. Thank god for that!

Back to being bored:

Suddenly the old Lambretta TV 175 salted away in the corner may become the focus of my attentions...

Now, a 14.35 bhp, 175 cc 2 stroke horizontal single with magneto ignition just might confound AndyF (and me).
Showing my age now.

Just 13 weeks to the first hill climb practice weekend......groan

Suppose I could buy a CDB 2 litre and a 2.5 crankshaft..where would that lead to?

Graham.

!
That was quick.
Maybe a 2.5 with my 20g is a better bet than a desirable 2.35..
Seems to me that everyone's got a 2.5 in or there abouts. Wanted to be a bit different. Is a 2.35 about 2 x more than a 2.5? (forget mathematical logic!)

G,
looking into it, if you use 1.0mm oversized pistons and a 79mm crank on a 2.0cdb you get somewhere like 2.15 iirc, could be just enough to give you a bit more onions on your 20g when your let it off the boil accidentally?

certainly a cheaper option with £350 worth of crank and about a tons worth of machining and it would take some monster boost.

The '2.3' engine is steeped in mystery compared to the 2.5/20g (what is now normal route).
I am not in a position to do such a engine now, too many home commitments, but this time next year will be a definite as the hill climb competition will be just so hot.
My arch rival in the EVO V will be doing a stoker i think, and as his 2 liter had 450+ a 2.2 (whatever Mitis have) will be.....catatrophic to me!

Next year 400 bhp in a tin-top will be avaerage to say the least. That used to be Supercar terratory.

Graham.

ps: why does Snet go so slow sometimes?
