Bolt-on 360 bhp x 330lbft: Phase one started.
Yo everyone!
What a day!
Just got back from the pub with the wife...
Three cars, three stories.
1
Andy F is a top bloke.
Cool, calm and collected, and only knows one screen to look at; the Lap Top. You can even swear at him with those Det-cans on!
We ended up with 3 cars for the day, so became a tuning centre for a while, terrorisinf Telford one by one.
2
Car No1: Mine!
Dropped the Apexi fc into the loom and waited for the ecu to match the tick-over and settle down. Got a few hints and tips from the Scottish Wizard while we waited.
Trundled out of the estate to the open road with every Nissan Mica 'cruising' along to Shirely Bassey.
Andy started off Safe, and pulled the car up so to speak measure by measure, you can actually feel the changes between the occational blats and rests.
We have a problem!
The car goes realy well from about 3200 to 5000ish when the cat d/p strangles the flow (
), just as many told me it would......I'm a Dunce.
The car will hold 1.2/1.4 then tail off to 1.2 at full chat while the ecu tries hard to pull the boost up; the map tells it all.
BUT, I tell you all, the surge fron 3.5 to 5K is BIG. The front end squirms and wriths as it all grapples (just) with the river of torque that flows.
Solution is easy, get an MoT and change back to the decat!
The map is tweeked by the Commander and 1.4 bar will be mine from 3.5 to 7+K, may god have mercy on my gearbox.
Should add that the car is so Smooth, James Bond would be envious.
Very pleased and a very interesting experience. Andy tells you so much so simply even I understood.
If i get to an MoT station tomorrow the pipe will be on by sunday night.
I have a lots to do at the race track so that will slow things down a bit.
3
Car 2: Mark from Wales, Tarmac rally car.
Hard luck to Mark as the misfire was the issue, but his det got 'fixed' by Andy and he can slay them at the next meeting.
Neat little RA fresh from Japan.
4
Car 3: Jerry's Stiv3 Wagon, but......
Well got at and with a 2.5 API engine conversion, FMIC and zillions of guages and wires everywhere.
Jerry had a little tweek or two made, BUT, and listen to me, the 2.5 conversion is stunning, what a road car. The pick-up and the accelleration is superb. No wonder people are doing these.
Dyney, I'm even more green with envey now.
What a great car.
So, a great result and a tweek to do, my mistake, but great fun!
This will be one killer car when done (but that 2.5.......)
And just for Steve:
the blast in 2nd to 7800, sharp change to 3rd, to 7800, sharp change to 4th to 7000 with the chassis dancing to the tune....oh my......
Knock-out.
The Wizard starts the spell..

The smelly end...

Mark and Andy at rest...

Thanks to everyone for your humour and support, Phase 1 is very nearly done.
Now, should I buy a nice new modern d/p or refit my old Magnex 3''?
Graham.

You must have had some fun today
Nice to see everything went to plan (well almost bloody cats)
Are you going to get it on a rolling road to see if you have made your target.

Andy, r u mapping on the road with the WB02 in the tail pipe ? or were u just mapping for MOT testing ?
Graham, good to hear that u got nice results, BTW if the car has been mapped at 1,2 bar from >5000 , will u have any trouble when increasing the boost to 1,4 bar > 5000 rpm ? or has this already been mapped for too ?. Finally does it feel "fast enough" to give a decent fight to those EVO guys ?

Carlos:
Andy has given me the settings to allow a safe 1.4 right across from about 3400 which i can dial in when the decat is back on.
The graphs clearly showed the boost gliding down from 1.4 at 3600 to 1.2 at 6000ish and the duty cycle on the injectors etc trying to hold the car at 1.4.
Andy showed me a map of Alan Bell's car which has a similar spec to mine except for the FMIC, and on his the 20g gave 1.2 at 3200. 1.4 at 3600 and held the boost rock steady at 1.4 to the 'red line' with the duty cycle actually easing off from about 4500 to the red line.
The power/torque delivery is as 'laggy' as the stock Sti v3 turbo that came off. The torque is much better from 3.5 (when at 1.4 bar) and will be very useful coming out of corners on the hill climbs.
I was getting close to the bloody EVO's last year and beating everyone else, so got a string of 2nd in class's, 2nd in class overall, and 16th in the Championship. Second fastest tin-top....guess what was the fastest road going tin-top....The Evo!
Enough seconds!
The EVO's are up to 2.2 litres now, 600bhp/500 lbft and weigh 1.5 tonne. Will I have enough?
As to the RR power run;
Yes, I want to have this done, and the only RR I know is the new one at Scooby Clinic in Chesterfield.
I have friday afternoon's off work so one friday soon....
Will let you all know.
Graham
ps: Steve: Going to find an MoT station today, probably via some country lanes...

^^^^ What he said, I've got the 3" straight through - they also do it tapered down to 2.5" so if you go this route make sure you order the right one.
You can always source a UK catted centre section for the next MOT, to save swapping the downpipe each year.
This thread is definately inspiring me to get my project done ASAP

Graham,
I have a H&S 3" downpipe should you want it, just removed yesterday, nowt wrong with it I just required one with a slight change and couldn't afford for the car to be off the road so had to get a new one made up and swap them.
Just to note that the OEM catted centre will not fit this downpipe however a H&S catted centre will, are cats as restrictive as people suggest

Just caught-up with all the messages, pleased that you all enjoy my suffering!
Some things to note:
1
MoT
Took it to the place who did it last year, with cat etc.
The Government have delayed the Computor-linked MoT certificate issue till Xmas this year, so I need not have fitted the bloody thing!
Anyway, being the good boy, the car gave 16% CO (fail is 20%)HC is 15ppm (fail is 200!), and CO at tickover was just in a pass...
2
Dilema!
Do I remove the cat and re-fit my old semi-open neck Magnex, or leave it alone...Help me out. Reading the above, I know the answer now.
3
The blast after the MoT:
After the event, i went and found my 'pretend' hillclimb country road route.(private test track..)
In the wet mind, but BLOODY HELL is this car ever FAST!

The punch from 4000 and to infinity is BALLISTIC, truly quick...nearly as strong as that 2.5 last night (wishful thinking?)
On one steep part on full throttle all 4 wheels lost traction I think, all on my stickest Kumho's too.
just says it all.
And it ticks over like a singer sewing machine, and it criuses like my X Type Jag, and it sounds quieter than before (maybe the Gruppe S headers?)
Andy, if you are reading this, will it make THAT much difference if I leave the cat on?

Great job done and a very interesting day, no wonder everyone keeps thanking you.
Graham.
ps, couldn't resist this, but an impression of me after this years hill climb championship,
(I should be so lucky....) (taken from an advertisement I did last year)

Graham, any MY97-00 bonnet scoop with do, they are all the same.
Plenty of people have fitted larger scoops and so there must be loads of them lying around in garages/sheds/lofts

Graham,
Glad the mapping went smoothly for you, IMHO i would remove the cat as you don't use the car as an out and out road car you may as well make the most of your new set up, and as stevebt say 20g at 1.4 to the redline really is just so relentless.
Keep us all informed as to how your season pans out.
Andy.
