Looks like my worry about additional tax on your only home is unfounded (for now!!)

Sooner the better for me.

Getting on a bit and want to get a flat somewhere.

Either that or a 4000% pay rise/Lottery win and I wont care

Perhaps lifelong mortgages will become the norm in this country as it is in others i.e. you start the mortgage, pay it until you
die and your offspring carry it on and eventually somewhere down the line the house is paid off. At present the rise in the price of houses is far outstripping the average wage rises so it would
seem something has to change.

IMO the way to approach buying a house is this:

the house i want costs xxxx. to buy it i will need to burrow yyyy. currently i can get a 5 year fixed deal to burrow yyyy at z%. the repayments on the *repayment* mortgage will cost me aa each month. i can afford this, taking into consideration all other debts, expenses, and costs of maintaining the house, yes or no? if no; don't buy it. if yes, do buy it.

very boring strategy but it hasn't made many people homeless.

Yes prices will crash, and IMO it will be within the next 18months.

US market is currently crashing, and historically our market has always followed theirs by 6-18months when theyve crashed.

I'm more worried about a sterling crash however - I hope it hangs on for another couple of years by which time I'll be out of here, and watching the ship sink from dryland! (Australia in my case)
