Actually we must be a worse breed in Scotland as the VTS shown in that picture is from Dunferline I believe It was posted on SSC and pretty much every Saxo driver fell about laughing at it

Its a bummer that the VTR is often badged to look like a VTS but at least the VTS has different alloys! It requires an even keener eye to spot the difference between a 106 GTI and a Quicksilver

Saxo Boy,

I often find the badges saying "Quicksilver" can give the game away somewhat!!

Oi! Enuff of the Punto bashing!!

My mates got a nice broom yellow one, with a few subtle mods...Yeah, it rolls like a boat, has skinny 14" wheels, but on 2nd gear overboost it *shifts*...

Been in another example with 16" wheels / koni's / 165bhp, and it would have run rings round a lot of things...

Yeah - Not disputing the fact that the VTS/GTi are better cars out the box, but don't completely discount the Punto, espec, as they're a fair bit cheaper to buy, and easy enough to bleed valve...

Reliability doesn't seem too bad - The engine / box on the Uno Turbo soldiered on even when the body rotted...The Punto shouldn't disintegate unless it's been slammed/poorly repaired...

Again, not dissing the Pug/VTS...Just imho...Drive them all, and see what you prefer I guess...

Does your brother prefer whiz bang high rev action or grunty boost action? Thats a key consideration

Punto GT was my first hot hatch and i loved it cos of the turbo. Quick in a straight line, and easy to mod. Similar spec 1.4T engine to the 5 GT turbo and plenty of people mod them, so don't right of its modding potential. Decent filter, exhaust and chip and you are well away...160bhp and above.

Don't know how long they last cos i had mine from new to 18000 miles, but that was trouble free motoring...no probs.

Horrible wheelspin in the wet, meant that much slower cars could beat you away from the lights if you are heavy with your right foot in the wet, but in the dry it was a hoot...would think the 106 GTi could out handle the punto, but would not say the punto had bad handling.

Turbo sounds good, and with a K&N induction kit and a decent zaust the punto sounds the biz.

Punto is much bigger inside, I find the 106 very crampt, especially around the pedals.

Before buying the GT I test drove all of the GTi at that time including 106 GTI and raylle, 306GTI6 + raylle, VTR, VTS. But as soon as I got in the punto that was it...i loved the turbo...not sure about the grey wheels, but they can be changed easy enough.

The price of the Punto is so much better as well, i would get the punto every time. Turbos all the way for me now....they rock.

My wife has a saxo VTR at the moment and i hate it...so underpowered, wish we had got the VTS now...but i suppose the insurance on the VTR is loads cheaper.

I used to have a Mk3 Punto GT, Black with the anthracite wheels and my brother bought a VTS shortly afterwards.
Yes the VTS handled loads better (I drove it a few times) but my brother always jumped at the chance to borrow the GT as you can't beat the noise of a Turbo! (with piperX, Exhaust incl Decat and DV)
Only really had a proper race against my mates VTR and despite totally messing up the start and smoking the front tyres still managed to p1ss all over him in a straight line.
Wouldnt have fancied going round corners against a GTi/VTR(S) though!
Personally I'd rather have the 106 over the Saxo as round our way they are pretty rare and the Saxos seem to end up doing laps of the McDonalds car park....with fogs on....
All IMHO of course!

Not as big a difference as you might think! All the neds that stuffed their VTR's through hedges pushed the premiums of them up You are right, you should have gone for the VTS As good a car as the VTR is its too slow to excite me.

Its true that the 'turbo' factor is a bonus but turbo's also have many drawbacks. Moreover the 1.6 16v pug/cit unit is a fantastic engine and will rev hard and freely to the red line

I had a punto GT3 for 2 years or 30k miles, never had anything wrong with it, was running 163bhp too. in standard form it would nail a vts on the flat, was a bit of a handful in the corners, but that just made it more fun. I drove all three of these cars and bought the punto.

Tell you mate to do the same and i bet he buys the punto.

I got the top gear reports in pdf format and loads of bumf on them............so just drop me a mail if you need to know anything or try www.puntosports.co.uk

The thing is it's my brothers 2nd car and first step on hot hatch playing field..... The cars got to be reliable and not too expensive to run, he already has a punto 55 (wow) and thats been mega reliable for the last 2 years but it hasnt got a turbo on it has it!!!

I guess we can drive them both and see but i agree with you on the point of puntos size... they have loads of room in them and the pug has not.

Anyway i guess being italians we should get the Punto but i guess we r just going out with open minds, the best car wins!!!!!

I'd say you'll prefer the 106 too. My VTS isn't tooo bad on petrol considering it's at 4k -> most of the time, I'm willing to bet it's a damn site better on fuel than a Punto GT! Make sure you run it on Optimax though

Anyway, what's with the slagging off of 18 year olds? I'm 18, leave me alone Not all of us can't drive, aspire to massive wheels and think that four tail pipes coming out of a 1.1 is cool

As my user name suggests, I had 106 GTi before the scoob, and agree that it is better than VTS's that I'd driven at the time. For some reason it just seemed to handle more possitively in corners although lift-off o/s was abit scary sometimes!! I still miss the Pug and managed to get 137bhp on 2 different rolling roads with only a Magnex cat-back exhaust and Jetex filter! If and when funds allow I would like one along side the Scoob
EVO mag have the times as; Pug 7.4 secs 0-60,22.2 to 100mph
VTS 7.6 and 22.6 so not much in it! and the Pug gets their vote as the one to have.

Yeah, at the end of the day, it's all down to personal opinion between the VTS/GTi. I got the VTS 'coz I reckon it looks better, has nicer interior and isn't as, and dare I say it, "girly"!

I agree with that last post Also my standard VTS did the 1/4m in 15.3s @89mph.....all the GTI's I've seen there didn't

I'm still amazed people are coming on saying one is better than the other. I challenge anyone short of a professional driver to lap any track or drive any road quicker in one than the other - performance wise they are the same so it comes down to looks and packaging

Why are you amazed SB, you've been saying the VTS is better for the last 3 pages

At least we all seem to agree that it comes down to personal preference and not a lot else - me I'd get the 106, the VTS is just a little to Max Power around here for me.

I agree with most things on this post that have been said about the VTS/GTI. APART from Rich and Mini saying the VTS is far superior to the GTI. BOLLOCKS! The two are so evenly matched it's untrue. I had countless blasts with VTS's in my GTI and beat loads. Doesn't mean it's definatly quicker. The ones that could drive the VTS properly were dead even with me. The VTS weighed 935kgs and the 106 was 950kgs. That's a 1/2 tank of fuel or a 2 stone heavier bloke. WOW!!!
The qoute about the GT leaving a VTS on the straight is a tad out IMHO too.
I had a 106 GTI for three years and apart from the dodgy build quality, the car was a hoot to drive and I still miss it alot.

Exclamation

working late again!...

Well I am pleased to say you are all WRONG.

Having owned both cars, I can honestly say your bro will enjoy either car. They are both super cars for the money.

The punto gt does have a bad reputation when it comes to the corners but this is an easy fix - buy a spax damper and spring kit as I and many other owners have and you will enjoy it all the more. Upgrade the anti roll bar and add a couple of strut braces and it is fantastic, all cheap mods to boot!

The punto feels quicker because of the turbo but is exactly the same in a stright line believe me!!!

The peugeot is a right gem, it has a smaller cabin which immidiatly gives the sense of a more chuckable car from the moment you get in it. Forget the VTS, unless your bro is looking to save £500 on buying it, as the seats in the 106 are so much more supportive, the rarity (less than 6000 106 gti's in the UK) and the fact that peugeot stiffed the shell whereas citroen didnt.

Oh and before you start, I had a VTS for 3 years, nowadays every kev owns a saxo and trys to make it look like a VTS, sorry you are fooling no one with your narrow track, drum brakes and baarrb sound from the 8v with K&N!

The GT is also rare and very subtle unless of course you choose yellow like I did. Running costs are identical, people think as soon as you have a turbo charged car you are in for big bills, rubish, take no notice.

Hope this helps

Dang! I've got the sell the scooby because lots of other people own them and some of them are young I can't believe people let that affect their choice of car?

I want an E46 M3 and everyone thinks M3 drivers are w@nkers. So what, I love the car and I want it for me - I don't care what other think and in 99 cases out of 100 it would be jelousy

I'm not mocking at all but there are more scooby's around that VTS (note not R which would be more comparible to a scooby sport).....FACT!

Sell up boys, our car is too popular

Ever consider that maybe its popular because its........dare I say it........good! There you have it......A subaru impreza turbo is a good car and that's why so many people have bought them

LOL @ Vtec Abuser, fool!

Some people are obviously incapable of understanding humour/jest over the internet. Of course the VTS is superior! I own one! I wouldn't go saying the girly GTi was superior now, would I?

Sigh.

Re-read my serious posts, you'll see I make the point of saying that personal taste is the only difference between the two.

Kenny can I suggest you grab a seat at the side of a road in Edinburgh and play a game of count the Saxo VT* we spent 3/4 an hour doing it near Tynecastle a couple of weeks back and I think we counted 9. More common than any other spec of car. Not slagging the car in any shape or form, but they are very very common.

Spot that man that can't tell the difference between a VTR and a VTS

Tell you what and remember this is published to scoobynet and a written contract Pick any location in Edinburgh (that's not right outside a Citroen garage ) and we can sit and have a beer/chin wag. If more than 9 VTS's go past you leave with my car, lock stock the lot. If you loose - you buy me a pint and grovel for forgiveness on SN

BTW, if you were counting VTRs and S's then 9 is low for 3-4 hours - I'd expect more!! You'd see more scooby's that VTS's or 106 GTI's

The surefire only ways to tell the difference between a VTR & VTS is to ask the driver (assuming they are honest) or check the chassis number, and I really couldn't be bothered with the hassle I owned a VTR for a couple of years when I was younger and as you know the number of external differences are minimal and not exactly difficult to switch. It looked like 7 Rs and 2 Ss but as most were modded...
Ultimately it doesn't really matter; when a member of the public sees one they just equate it to being a sporty Saxo and most of us place some stock on public opinion (one reason why Isold my scoob when I did)

Tempting as your offer is I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of selling another Impreza It was over 3/4 an hour (as in 45 minutes) that we did our study, only saw one scoob (a bit strange as I trip over the things wandering around Glasgow) and no RX-7s .

Still, off to Nurburing & Spa tomorrow, doubt I'll see too many VT*, but will keep an eye out

The most obvious difference between current VTRs and S's are the alloys as the VTS has flat faced ones now. The best way to tell though it to look at the rear head-rests. The VTS has headrests but the VTR has little bumps moulded into the seat back. The 16v badges are a real clue as well as only a select few plonkers are stupid enough to badge an 8v car incorrectly
