World War 3, just how close are we?

oh fast bloke behave yourself!
i can appreciate his opinion - i just voiced mine. i just i think it's ill-informed and politically-motivated. which for a journalist is a cardinal sin because it eschews professional objectivity. if he was a politician, it wouldn't matter a jot - in fact, it would be expected.
anyway, i absolutely reserve the right to say what i like about my uncle. so there.

I have just read this thread for the first time and it scares me sh1tless. Why? Because most of you are just espousing the ideals that Bin Lad despises the west for. We are probably going to end up in another Vietnam for the same reason as the last one, i.e. the general U.S. attitudes of:
1. Yes you can have freedom of speech, so long as you say nothing that offends me!
2. Yes you may govern your country how you like, but if you do something I don't like I will bomb the **** out of you. (but I won't use ground troops because we don't like getting our hands dirty).
3. The most popular prase used by GI's in Vietnam was "the only good gook is a dead gook". Unfortunately this also included a large number of South Vietnamese, whom they were supposed to be defending.
If this has caused offence to anybody I am truly sorry, however we do need to wake up to the fact that the leader of the western world is an intrinsically weak man, who speaks the view of the last person he spoke to. Unfortunately this is likely to be Princess Tony, a man more than accustomed to getting into bed with allegedly reformed terrorists.
and finally one last point. the western media seems to have neglected the fact that Bin Lad is independently one of the worlds wealthiest men, the vast majority of the Afghan people (a noble and ancient race) have probably never even heard of him, let alone supported his views.

An intrinsically weak man and princess Tony? - these men have more intelligence and guts in their toenail than you have in your entire body.
Simple fact - but needs to be said.

Superior intellect I doubt that very much anyway its not what you know, its how you use what you do know that counts.

Fear of WWIII is well over the top IMO. Dying is the same however it happens, everyone here takes a small risk of it when punting down their favourite B road in a scoob - much more likely to get killed by some dumb grandma pulling out in front of you whilst you're doing 90mph than by some terrorist nutcase. Even in Vietnam only 50k Americans died, out of 200 million. More people died of household accidents in the USA than in the Vietnam war.
5000 people dying in a terrorist attack is a tragic event, but far more than that die every single day anyway. 30,000 Indians died recently in an earthquake and not too many people shed a tear here or anywhere else for that matter. Diarhhoea (sp?) kills millions each year in Africa, makes the terrorist threat look pretty insignificant really, and it only costs about 30p to prevent someone getting killed by it. Don't notice too many companies donating money to stop that??
Chill out - unless you want to move to the Shetlands there isn't much you can do anyway. The Cold War was far more dangerous than this threat, yet I don't recall people crapping their pants in 1984. Also what about the Blitz spirit in the UK? People had genuine reasons to think they would be under **** dictatorship in a matter of weeks, yet they remained resolute. A terrorist attack happens 2000 miles away and suddenly everyone here is freaking out? Get a grip please.

Excuse me?
It took George W Bush 3 DAYS to show up in New York to survey the damage, even Ronnie would have made it there sooner.
As for Tony Blair, yes I agree Alastair Campbell has a greater intellect than even the great Pete Lewis, But, and this is a big BUT, there is now way on this earth that you are going to convince me that Tony Blair is anything other than a mouthpiece for him.

I think the reason that people are worried at the moment is because of the uncertainty.
Yes, during the Blitz, people lived with the prospect of bombs raining down on them every night - but they knew what to expect. The groundrules were set.
Equally, during the Cold War, there were moments that the world seemed to teeter on the brink of Nuclear War. But, again, we all knew that if it happened then everything would be obliterated.
However, now, things are different. Now we have to live with the fear of people delivering bioweapons in an aerosol can (and anthrax is nowhere near as scary as some of the genetically engineered viruses out there). And the people who will do it will shed no tears over the deaths they cause - because they honestly believe that they are doing the right thing. That they will be rewarded in heaven for killing the infidels (and before someone corrects me - I don't mean all Islamic people feel this way, just those who choose to interpret the Koran in this way)
The problem is that non-state actors (i.e. terrorist groups) increasingly are able to venture into areas of warfare that were previously the domain of states. It is comparatively easy to create chemical and biological weapons - and comparatively cheap.
The threat of nuclear weapons is also growing - not just from home grown devices but from black market trade in the former Soviet Republics. The threat of the Taliban gaining Pakistani nuclear weapons is credible should an Islamic uprising occur.
As has been pointed out, the effective range of these missiles is only 150 miles. But it's certainly not beyond the realms of possibility that Osama Bin Laden (with his multi-million dollar fortune) has been able to purchase the delivery system for a nuclear missile (perhaps an old ICBM with no warhead from the ex-Soviet Union or maybe a missile from China). It's well known that he has been trying to source nuclear submarines from Iran...
Yes, it is worrying. No, I don't lose sleep at night. The problem is - all of this is beyond our ability to control. We just have to wait and see how it turns out. The only thing I know for sure is that this problem won't go away overnight.
And, as for whether this is the right thing to do. I think so. Wholeheartedly. What we sometimes forget - in a culture where we have freedom of speech and impressive human rights legislation - is that not everywhere is the same. Not everyone shares our revulsion at killing innocents. If we don't stop these people now and destroy their networks of support then - sometime in the next 20 years - it won't be a plane. It will be a nuke.
