Cool

I live just down the road form Woodford, & I can remember going to the airshows and seeing Lightnings & Vulcans in the 70's, no modern aircraft even comes close to the spectacle.
The Lightnings used to go vertical off the end of the runway, over the middle of Poynton, taking out most of the windows in the process. Even as a child I thought that was a pretty cool trick

I do seem to recall that the Lightning had a bit of a scary rep for unexpected flameouts though

Awesome machine, and looks far better than the Tornado that replaced it. (bit of a Scooby thing...)

I had the fortunate experience of seeing one do the 0-40,000ft thing when I was a teenager at RAF Coningsby. Words can't describe it.
Take off, raise gear, keep accelerating, then just go vertical over the end of the runway. The noise was amazing. Fooking loud, but amazing. I lost sight of the thing before it went quiet.

Long term plan is to have a flight in either the one state side or the one at Cape Town (have to keep saving the pennies)

not as bad at flameouts as the early jaguar. I spent a week with 8 1/2 squadron, they were called 8 1/2 squadron because half of their jaguars crashed the year i was there! They were of course 17 squadron based at RAF Bruggen.

I have been to many of woodfords shows, my best mate worked there for a very long time. I was there when the spitfire went into the runway, not a pretty sight. Apart from the Vulcan the most impresive thing i saw there was the SU27 doing its amazing displays of flipping the front up at 45 degrees to the direction of travel followed by 5G turns, absolutely mind blowing.

Back on the Clarkson thing, he also says not to touch the SMGII Sequential gearbox on the M3 - ??????, Ive used it and it rocks!!!, its general opinion that is the best F1 style gearbox on the market!!

I like Clarkson but he has slated every sequential F! box on the market!!

That would be a neat trick because i have no moderator rights over any forum other than drivetrain and suspension.

So in reply, **** off you miserable *******

Back to Clarkson, the reason the plane is in his garden was to stick two fingers up at the local planning dept.

They refused his extension, so he put the Lightning in the front garden, something they can't do a thing about.

Top Bloke.

Just tp take the thread back off topic again...

RAF Binbrook, the "Last Last Lightning Show"

(transonic shock waves - a bit close to doing something very illegal over the UK!)

The lightning is overated. Give me the Starfighter any day if you like vintage planes. If its been crashed by chuck yeager, its good..

Over-rated? True, almost as many Lightnings crashed as the "Widow-maker" F104... but I know which would win a dogfight. Starfighters corner about as well as Koni-equipped Cav if reports are to be believed

Sorry, but I think Clarkson is a self opinionated, arrogant, right-wing, loud mouthed w@nker
I share a similar view

Cool

Still haven't forgiven him for what he did for the residuals on my old fleet of Vauxhall Vectras, or indirectly the Luton Vauxhall Plant itself....not many Clarkson fans there.
Couldn't give a toss what he thinks about my bug-eyed beast I like ugly!. He has to have an extreme view on everything, thats how he made a name for himself.
He is beginning to look a bit old and conceited these days...more laughs less malice please Jerry!
Still like watching the old f*rt though!
