Jake

Spoon is simply trying to assign a different text tone to a specific contact and its not working (apparently because that contact has an android phone)

yes i know,

this works on my phone tho

the procedure im doing is:

phone>contacts>choose person>edit>text tone>choose from alert tones>done

worked for me from two different android phones htc/samsung.

as this isnt working i suggest a work around

so get a copy of the iphone tone he wants, and convert it to a ringtone, then use that for his text message alert,

not ideal but it ends this saga lol

when you say custom tone, i take it you mean one of the pre installed factory tones?

not a tone you have added
i've used Apple the moment I left my Sony P900 PDA and where I'm no fan of Apple I couldn't change to Android now without a fuss. Changing settings is simple, having them work correctly isn't so simple of recent years. Try sending an email to an incorrect email address and when it gets returned open the Delivery Report. My iPhone and iPad crash every time and have done for months. There are other lingering annoyances too.

Apple are definitely losing ground where reliability is concerned and my confidence in their ability to sort things quickly is eroding. Mind you, what daft sod released the Sky Q mini boxes in their current state!! It appears more importance is given to having technology out there before testing is final.

Pre-installed tones or purchased tones have both been tested.

Thanks, I've tried through both and nothing.

At least I'm not alone with this despite Apple telling me I'm the first to have reported it.

A process of elimination would suggest the tones aren't at fault but the implementation of the tones is.

Do I have to wear a baseball cap back to front to download and convert to m4r?

I didn't say that. Apple makes it easy enough for all to implement change but in this case change isn't working.

The plot thickens

Did it for an android user - set through contacts directly. And it works - custom user tone saved and working as it should.

Set the windows phone user text tone that had earlier failed also directly through contacts and it now works too.

Wierd. Very Weird

I'm on my own again then. Oh well, thanks for your efforts. Only one thing worse than something not working is it not working intermittently. At least I can trust mine.

You should try deleting the contact and adding again, or at least deleting their number and creating a new contact with that number. If you haven't already.

Yup, tried that several times and even changed the contact name, network and number.

Mine was none of that, it was incompetence..

It took a week to finally get a phone after being told it would be 1 to 2 days and then they gave me someone else's reserved phone in store because mine apparently wasn't at the store although customer services told me it was!. It then took another 3 days to actually get it switched on and when it came on it wasn't the plan I had signed and there was nothing they could do about it without the price going up because it was the black Friday deal.

In total I made 4 trips to the store trying to resolve it and my wife also went there twice......Seriously, what a shower of ****..

Luckily my wife's contract doesn't end until the 28th of this month so I've given her my Z5 to put her sim in and I'm rocking my old S2 which hasn't seen the light of day for years!
