Iphone7 heat issues as well?

Oh, so your issue is you can set custom message tones for friends with anything other than an Android device? That's truly odd.

iMessage text tones are fine, Jack, they all work as set. I always assign one particular number with its own tone which I consider important, hence spending so much time on it with Apple. The contact will show the correct tone but sound the default tone.

Hmm, I can't find anything much similar and my google foo is strong. Any issues seem really old and often involve user created tones or another was multiple contacts with the same number.

I will do a backup and restore as a new phone and see if it works. If so, I will add apps page at a time etc until it stops working.

Had exactly the same issue just now from a friend with a Windows phone. Set the text tone for them to a custom tone, but the phone plays the default text tone when the message arrives.
You're not alone and apparently its not just Android, but Windows too.

I don't know anybody with a Windows phone but your findings open this issue up further. Does it still show the custom tone in their contact profile or did that revert back to default too as well as the sound?
I'm convinced lots of iPhone owners haven't tried it and those that have and consequently found a fault really aren't that bothered and haven't either reported it or considered posting it anywhere. For me, it is an important feature on a phone hence the reason I've given Apple some stick.

me too,
the other way round i suppose it to change the phone from default to another tone and then use a diffenrent tone for the said person
i have the back to the future chime for all my txt/imessage so could change the mrs number to bells if i wanted to

Tried every permutation. In fact my default tone isn't the shipped default tone but of course I have tried it back as Apple's default and still it fails.

Don't confuse ring tones for text tones. Is your default text tone set to a different tone to your dad's contact tone?

ah i now see where your coming from
you want to use a different factory iphone tone for said person, not a ringtone(message alert)
ill try again
but tbh if thats the case im surprised you got discount as its so trivial,
the work around would be to download the mp3 sound you want, change it to an acc version in itunes, rename it as a m4r file and drop it into ring tones and use that, yes its a faf, but once your done ul never have to do it again

It is also not a trivial point when it is meant to work and is required. Next you'll be telling me you'd not care if your new car was delivered with just the front seats.
I spent a lot of time on this with Apple, discount was inevitable.

When someone texts that contact it should sound the custom tone. At the moment when an Android phone texts my phone the default text tone sounds, not the custom tone.
DD has tested his to find he has the same problem but when texted from a Windows phone. Hopefully he can test it from an Android phone and I will try to find someone with a Windows phone to test mine.

done it both ways,
you should of got an android phone haha far easier to change stuff on,
but yeah ive done it evry way you can and it works on all the ways.
when you say custom tone, i take it you mean one of the pre installed factory tones?
not a tone you have added

what im saying is,
tell me a tone u want to use, ill convert it and send it you, then just drop it into itunes to your phone and pick it, thats the only possible way i can think you can do it, if its not working for you.

Well I never, DD, thanks for trying it. It'll be interesting to see if anybody else can test it and report back.
I don't know anybody with a Windows phone but your findings open this issue up further. Does it still show the custom tone in their contact profile or did that revert back to default too as well as the sound?

It's reset the text tone to default in the contacts profile. I'd set it by accessing contact info from the messages app. Trying again having set it direct from the contacts app. Will let you know.
