The 555 is another internet myth, as is the WRC on the MY99/00.
The first Type R was only available with 2 options & 3 "solid" colours which were painted to order.
They were announced in January 1997 & the first off the production line was car number 0054847 which was white, in late February 1997.
You can see the brochure scans for the MY97, MY99, MY00 cars on the links below

As said above, no Type R had a quickrack - it would be interesting to know where you got that information from?

My car was imported by the owner of Perth Subaru strait from the factory, it was never registered in Japan and had 19 km on the clock when it arrived in Perth. It was completely standard, even still on it's original tyres when I bought it.
It was the first thing that Colin (the late and great McRae) said as soon as he got in it... "How did you find one with this rack" and that the first I knew it had one.
At the end of the day, every brochure Ford ever had, said the S1 RS turbo was ONLY available in white! But Lady Diana had a black one???

However I'm still a bit undecided. There are other Type Rs around for similar prices which have had a lot of work done - There is a white on here with a beautifully clean underside for similar money and Scoobyclinic have a black one with equally a lot of work carried out - irrespective of what people think of SC the point being £12K would seem to get a car which has had a lot of work carried out already. OR a completely standard car fresh in to the country.
My intentions are to keep the car as standard as possible. Don't want big power engine builds, not going to shower it in cosmetic mods and massive wheels. The way I see it, if I choose the right car now, use it occasionally and keep it well maintained it will go up in value over time.
I'll start another thread if I don't get much response here but how do you look after a car that is only used occasionally? I have 2 cars at the mo - B7 A4 TDI170 Avant and a Mini Cooper. I pretty much use the cooper every day and the A4 for long journeys and when I'm racing RC. However, when either sit unused even for a week, the brakes sound awful and on the mini it hasn't really gone away.

iirc the one up at clinic has a 2.5 in it which goes really well with the short ratio box (mines 2.5 as well).

That would be a worry for me too in regards to the engine but a last of line the version 6 in grey, I would place it above a black or white version 5 regardless of how much money they have had thrown at them.
The white one has has a facelift front end but is a version 4 car, so not really factory standard anymore, the SC car has a 2.5 which is also not standard. IMO the closer a car is to factory spec the more it will be worth in the future. I am saying this as an owner of big power type r in white lol

Only thing in the pics that puts me off a bit is the shocks which may well be of the JDM bone shaker variety and the drivers seat bolster shows signs of wear.
As an aside - can the seats be re-covered with genuine/exact replica examples and the shocks - is it possible to get OE shocks still?

This is my thinking to be honest. And although an engine/box has been rebuilt there's nothing to say it won't let go at some point.

As for the OE shocks I dont think you can buy them anymore but seen a few folk use KYB shocks with eibach springs, this tends to give a better drive and suitability for our roads.

Sooo, 8 months later I've finally started the process of actively looking for a Type R.
I kick myself regularly for not buying the grey Type R from Torque GT (wasn't quite the right time for me admittedly) so have asked them to help me find another one.
Will probably take a while to find the right one but I'm in no hurry. It's my 40th birthday present so has until June to get here

Thank you but I'm looking for completely standard car.
Typically, having just instructed an importer to start looking, an example of the car I'm after pops up.
