Default aftermarket wheels ideal offset?

as above, looking at fitting aftermarket wheels on a classic. what is the ideal offset, I know from previous experience it doesn't have to be bang on +or- a bit. just don't want to buy some and find they either or catch or stick out too much

Mine are et48 and I run 225 40 18 and they are perfect for fitting over big brakes and clear the arches on the front but the back needed a slight roll .
When I ran 215 35 18 there was loads of clearance.

the width of the wheel and also sometimes different makes of tyre can also add complications.........

On a classic, the accepted size for tyres on 17" wheels is 215/40. That gets you as close as possible to the original rolling radius.

My UK turbo came with 195/60R15 as standard from the factory.

215/40R17 tyres are 11mm smaller diameter.
215/45R17 tyres are 10mm larger diameter.

If you're running standard ride height on a classic then I'd be buying the 215/45R17 for potentially better ride comfort. That's exactly what I'll be doing as my classic came with 205/40R17 when I bought it!
