Brake Judder and Possible Seized Piston?
Hi
Any help would be appreciated:
A while back, I took the car to get new pads fitted. Sadly a caliper had seized. No problem, a replacement set were sourced via scoobynet. A second hand set of refurbished calipers from godspeed.
Since they were fitted, along with grooved discs, braided hoses, fluid and new pads, it seems that at high speed, I get terrible judder. Not much comes through the steering wheel, but you can certainly feel it. Also I sometimes hear a 'wirring' noise, as if the pads are rubbing on the disk. This is all occuring on the nearside only. Offside brakes are all good :-)
At lower speeds, none of this occurs at all.
I took the pads out to see if i could find any obvious faults, one pad has worn out quicker than the other.
It all sounds to me like the replacement caliper is sticking as well, so I should probably bite the bullet and replace the calipers again with new items.
Before doing so, thought I'd ask if anyone has any advice?
Any help would be appreciated:

Warped discs, hub not cleaned properly when the discs were replaced, loose caliper bolt....etc. check the basics first before you spend any serious cash. If they are nee discs then they shouldn't have warped already. Some pads can leave deposits on the disc that can cause the vibration.
Has the vibration always been there since fitting the new brakes or has the problem started after x amount of miles?

I didn't notice much in the first few hundred miles as I was taking it easy in order to bed the brakes in properly. Since this was complete, they've always done it.
To be fair, the disks we're purchased second hand along with the calipers. The guy who fitted them (Rich at FB tuning) said they seemed all good. I guess with second hand parts, there are never any guarantees!

Still didn't answer my question....Does it vibrate just when you brake or all the time?
You say there were refurbished by Godspeed? How long before you bought them?
Ad you suggest though, 2nd parts is always a risk. I would never fit 2nd hand brake discs.

Grooved disks often "whir" anyway as the grooves pass the pads, check you're disks first with a dial gauge if you can borrow one or a cruder method of removing wheel, put a few wheels nuts back on with spacers, and rotate the disk quickly watching for movement as it passes through calliper.

No idea when they were refurbed, but I imagine a year or two before I got them.
2nd hand disks were far better than the brakes on it before! Although I knew at the time I should have just replaced it all with new items. Buy cheap you buy twice

Do you have any photo's of the calipers , as once we have reconditioned them with stainless pistons there should be no problems , they only time we have seen issues is if the outer dust seal has moved and dust gets into the calipers , and this was a fitting error when someone unclipped them by mistake changing pads

If the brakes aren't 'dragging' then it can't be a sticky caliper piston. My money is on a warped disc. You can get a new oem set for under £50. £70 with new pads.

I experienced the same a few weeks back, serious juddering at speed felt through the steering wheel and brake pedal but when driving around town the brakes were normal. The problem turned out to be a warped front disc, changed both fronts for new and now works like a dream. In addition I read somewhere that if the juddering was only felt through the brake pedal it's the rear discs causing the problem.
