Default What size tyres *should* I have?

On BK299 STi Gold alloys, 17". Currently running stretched 215/40/R17 tyres, and as you can imagine there is literally no give in the tyre wall and thus the ride is a nightmare, and the rims are scratched to bits.

I'm personally not a fan of stretched tyres on British roads, so what tyre size should I be running?
The previous owner said that the alloys are wider than the standard ones and thus a narrower tyre had to be put on so that it didn't rub on the suspension; so would 10mm or 20mm spacers resolve this issue when I put on the correct tyre size? I don't want to put any bigger than 20mm spacers on.

Sounds like the wheels are the wrong offset for the car. Spacers would resolve that problem but I don't recommend using spacers.

What width are your wheels? By the sound of it they are bigger than 7".

Same as these as far as I can tell, but I'll have a proper look at them in daylight to make sure

EDIT: Had a proper look and they're Compomotive CX-R alloys. There isn't any other writing on them as far as I can see

They seem to come in 7", 7.5" and 8".
