Default 8.5" wide wheel advice

Hi guys, i have a 2005 blobeye sti with the widetrack rear. Im looking at buying a set or rota wheels 18x8.5", 5x114.3 with et44.

The car is lowered around 40mm on coilovers.

Whats the best/widest tyre i could fit on these rims without needing arch work, or experiencing any sort or rubbing?

Was looking at a 245 x 35 x 18?

How would the et44 offset look on the car?

Any help much appreciated

Lewis

as far as I know your rear tyres will rub the coil overs on the rear with the et44 and 245s I think you need to go to et38 or 35, you will have to roll your rear arches a tad.

But it will look fantastic

235,40,18 will be maximum tyre but you will have to run a 5mm spacer to stop them rubbing on the coilovers at the rear . they will be fine with no arch rubbing etc and the driveabilty will be kept

hi guys thanks for you replies.

Will the alignment all need redoing? the car sits low now with the wheels quite close to the arches, will these wheels stick out of the arches?

And what size tyre would you personally recommend? I want a wide as i can go really as im a big fan or wide tyres that look stocky from the rear of the car.

Any pictures or relevent info much appreciated

Might be a daft question,
you do know when the et Number gets lower the wheel moves further out
so et44 will rub the coilover
et25 will rub the arch

Thanks for clearing that up for me bez, you learn something everyday!

What's the et number on the standard sti 17" wheels? Just so I can compare the difference.

And et44 with 245/35/18 tyres, lowered 40mm, 5mm spacers on rear, will Definatly be ok?

Thanks

If you have not bought the wheels yet
you will not go far wrong talking to and taking advice from M444GY
He knows his wheels
only use spacers if you are using up old wheels

i run 18x8,5 et44 rotas on my classic with just the arches rolled on 225,40,18s

from experiance the same wheels on a newage rub on the suspension on the back hence the 5mm spacer is needed

i fitted mine to a friends bug with colovers yesterday and we had to use a spacer .245,35s will go on but a 40 profile would be better for comfort and looks hence me sayin sacrifice the 35 for a 40 and the 245 for a 235

Thanks for the advice m444gy. Reason I wanted a 35 profile is because I want the car sitting low on these wheels, and I also want the rolling diameter to match the wheels I have now (235/45/17) I just assumed 35 profile would match. Why do you think a 40 would look better than a 35? sorry for the 100 questions! Going to order the wheels tomorrow

One more question, is it safe to run a 5mm spacer on the rear to stop tyre rubbing? I've read it can cause extra stress on the wheel bearings, and also means the wheels nut cannot complete as many revolutions when being screwed into the hub.

Would I need spacers on the front too? Or just the rear?

And would they only rub if I got 245 I stead of 235 tyres?

Cheers

I have 8.5x18 Rota Grid Drifts ET35 on my widetrack blob,225/40/18 tyres, running BC,s,not stupidly low, fast road set-up so running a bit of camber which probably helps but no rubbing issues at all

Hi mate thanks for reply.. How come you went for a 225 tyre? I thought the minimum tyre for a 8.5 " rim was 235. Otherwise you run the risk of damaging the rim as its a bit narrow for the rim. Correct me if I'm wrong

i have run 15 mm spacers on my classic for 3 years with no issues with the bearings , the nuts will go on fine and have enough turns to bolt them up tight , i use 5 mms on my track car and it gets hammered , never had an issue . 225s on an 8.5 are ok , they stretch just a bit but dont look odd .

ideally 5mms all round to even everything up

Ok cool, ill go for 5mm spacers all round in that case. Won't my geometry need redoing though? The car is has a fast road setup at the moment
