vibration/juddering under braking. Please help
#1
Hello
Friend has just bought an M plate WRX. Under braking, there is a noticable vibration/juddering (I can clearly feel it in the passenger seat).
It has had very recent front discs/pads prior to its purchase (there is zero lip on the front discs).
Any ideas what this could be? I suggested he get the tracking checked, if not maybe wheel bearing or even worse suspension bent
Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Check ya disks, but i know this sounds stupid... also check ya tire pressures. Friend took his car to be serviced and found getting alot of feed back through steering column under braking. Turn out garage had over inflated his tires.....

If you feel juddering under the seat it is an indication that the rear discs are warped. Try clamping off the rear brake hoses with hose claps (be careful, dont nick the hose) and test drive. If the vibrations gone then you know its the rears. The rear brakes dont do too much work so dont worry about this, but drive extra cautiously.
I had exactly the same problem on mine, and the symptoms sound the same.
Hope this helps.

If hoses were that perished they would rupture under normal braking, as there is no more force involved in clamping than if the pads / pistons were driven against the disc. You are just recreating this scenario earlier in the system.

99% it's cheap discs that have warped. But if the brakes have always done this from new it's possible they are not sitting true. Take off the discs, clean the mating surfaces of rust and cack, and try again. What discs and pads?
Richard.
Edited to add that I don't like the sound of clamping the rear hoses, especially on an older car where they are maybe perished. If the fronts are warped, you can feel it through the steering very clearly. If the steering's fine but you can feel vibration through the seat under braking, it's rears.
