its a total pita with the solid 290mm discs and sliding calipers...........you'd be better getting the brake backing plates (or complete hubs) off a v4-6 car that had the 2pots fitted as std, then its basically a bolt-on job

I haven't seen any RA's with the larger rear discs , only the type R's , you sure you have 290mm discs ?
If you do , the easiest way to upgrade the brakes is to fit the vented type R rear discs , and late classic vented calipers off a 99 UK turbo , RB5 and P1 , these will fit straight onto your car , and the vented discs are easier and cheaper to get then the solid ones.
Other than that its as Alyn says , change the backplates from either a version 4 onwards type R or a 2001 onwards STi
Cheers Ian

Thanks for the help so far
Edit: been searching and everything I can find suggests that, year on year, the type R and STI RA share drivetrain components. So I'm looking at 290mm solid discs with sliding calipers.

your correct, specifically the STi RA shares the same R180 rear diff and brakes (from v3 to v6) as the type-R
if its a std RA then it simply uses a WRX chassis............

I had an RA STi and it had the 266mm rear brakes and 160 back end , I have put brakes on quite a few as well , and they all had 266mm brakes on the rear.
The only RA I have worked on that had 290mm rear discs was a very late one which had 2 pot calipers on the rear.

pukka STi RA's from v3> mirror type-R's, so not sure what you have had Ian but thats how they should be...............
the models do get very confusing as you get WRX based RA also and 4door std STi's that simply use the small R160 and std brakes
hope this helps, alyn
