Default Brakes for Legacy GT-B 1997

Hi everyone,

Been having a massive headache trying to source brake parts for my Dad's Legacy GT-B wagon (BG5B), sorry if this is a n00b question but there just doesn't seem to be a definitive answer anywhere I've searched.

Basically, the car has previously suffered from knackered slide pins causing uneven pad wear. It had the pins out and re-greased with new pads. The braking hasn't always been great (Not uncommon on this series of legacy from what I've been able to tell, everyone seems to have upgraded brakes).

But, one front and one rear caliper has messed up again and Dad wants:

New calipers front and rear
New front discs
New front and rear redstuff/yellowstuff pads

I've heard some impreza calipers are a good upgrade, how costly would this be? And which type to get - as we want to buy new/refurbed rather than 2nd hand, or would refurbed standard items be fine?

Problem is, every site seems to list different sizes and no definitive answer on what will actually fit or match the other parts. It's driving me mad trying to find a whole set.

Any suggestions? I'd be very grateful - apologies for the barrage of questions but this is my first attempt at subaru maintenance/modding as I've always been a nissan guy!

Thanks
Corbs

Definately change your calipers though standard calipers are crap.

As shaid said, get some 4 pots on the front! if you want the peace of mind of new calipers, send them away somewhere for a rebuild... worth mentioning though they dont fit under the standard gtb wheels!

Discs at the front should be the 294mm ones which are identical to an impreza wrx with the subaru branded 4 pots.

At the rear things are trickyer as the bg5 gtb had a larger disc than anything else on the rear so changing calipers isnt easy! Discs and pads are available though, best bet would be to speak to Alyn at AS performance .... he knows his stuff!

Also, read this post on uklegacy, it might help.

Thanks very much for the replies, the 4 pot upgrade for the fronts sounds great. I don't know if the car has standard alloys or not though - any chance you could tell me from the pic?

Shaid that's really nice of you to offer, but we are a bit hesitant to put standard ones on rather than new/refurbed in case they also messed up within a few hundred miles if you see what I mean?
EDIT-Although now that I think of it, it could be worth fitting 2nd hand ones just to get the car working over xmas/new years and sending the old ones to be refurbed. I just know Dad won't want to change the wheels if impreza calipers won't fit under the ones above, it is a great deal though.

They certainly arent standard alloys .... I dont recognise them either.

What you need is someone with a 4 potted car to try one over and find out! only way to be sure really!

Yes you're right, sadly I'm against the clock on this one as Dad lives in the middle of nowhere in Scotland and need the car back on the road for Christmas or I'll be designated driver on a minibus!

Still, i bet if you started a post titled something like "impreza with 4 pots near Argyll needed for a wee favour" .... youd have the answer this side of the weekend.

Alternatively, factor a set of these into the cost .... BUT, the ones on there already MIGHT fit! Just highlighting its an unknown.

Good point! Looking at your link and from what I know of the car, I'm 85% certain they will fit over the calipers. I'm so tempted to just order the upgrade.

Looking at the shape and spoke design , I would say the wheels fitted on his car now will clear the Subaru 4 pots , it's looks like they have loads of room , if you ask him to measure the gap between the disc where the pads mate to , and the inside of the spokes I can measure the calipers I have here to see if they will fit

Hey Ian, just got a text from Dad who says the distance from disc to inside of wheel is 60mm on the front. Thanks!

Hi
That means he will have 6-7mm clearance between the calipers and spokes then

Cheers Ian
