I noticed that the rubber was a bit "wavy" and slightly perished around the pistons after one track day. Obviously I can't go replacing them every time - it did not look like they were sealing anything whatsoever - I guessed just a dust guard and to stop the piston rubbing the caliper as it operates? Is this an issue?

they are made of very soft rubber,as long as they are not burst I would not worry about it.some racing brake calipers do not run these seals but they do not have to put up with the dirt/salt etc from daily use.

John,
Over the last six months I have researched (and observed) a huge body of opinion about brakes. I am no expert but have concluded that dust seals around pistons are a carry over from a bygone age. Their necessity is not recognised by racing engineers but apparently their presence comforts the buying public. I have just installed a competition set-up with stainless pistons that operate without "seals" as on most track appications. As you rightly point out, a fade resistant brake installation will continue operating at temperatures well beyond the melting point of rubber dust seals.

JJ, racing calipers don't have seals because they are cleaned and checked after every race. On a road car, you risk sticking pistons and corroded calipers. Which is why Brembo, AP Racing, Alcon etc fit seals and a durable finish to all their road going products.

Road calibres need dust seals, On Racing cars they don't care as they clean it after each race.
I have the same problem as John, after a track day my seals was melted. I have just ordered new ones, price was around 30 pounds for one calibre.

You can buy the Caliper Piston Seal kit from your nearest Subaru Dealer, I paid around £15 for a set not so long back and that did 4 pistons.
Have fun getting them on with the circlip supplied, bugger of a job
