Default Why are these rubbing???

Hello all.

I have purchased a set of 04 wrx alloys with 225/45/17 tyre's to go on my 1999 classic, after research on here & asking at the tyre fitters the opinion was that the tyres will be fine.

After fitting them the rears are rubbing on the strut's, the car is not lowered & has standaed suspension, any thoughts why this is happening???

The missus has 04 wrx wheels on her classic. She has 215/45/17s on it with no rubbing whatsoever.

The arches are rolled so no problem there, definately r=ubbing the corner of the tyre on the strut, so people are running 225/45/17" with no problem, my front's are fine, not sure what is going on here!!!

Tyres are cheap nexus 3000 but was hoping to wear them down until it was time for a decent set.

If using the 7J WRX alloys you should really use a 215 tyre. I have found even the
7.5J STI alloys are very close to the strut. I used to use a set on my race RA just as road wheels for mapping etc but used a 5mm spacer as I didnt like how close they were.

How do I know if they are 7 or 7.5j?

Cheers.

It will be on the wheel in embossed lettering, cant remember exactly where. But the WRX alloys are 7J and the STI alloys are 7.5J

The STI alloys look like this with the little shapes between the spokes.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SUBARU-IMPREZA...item3cb761407b

The WRX alloys look like this, ignore what the idiot says in the auction the WRX alloys DO NOT clear Brembo's.

Hope that helps

225's will rub (especially on 45/17 rubber) as they are too wide and intrude onto the arch.
215/40/17 or 205/45/17 are what people go for normally.

Disagree I have had 7.5J STI alloys with 225x45x17 and 7.5J rotas with ET42 offset with same tyres and the issue has always been the proximity of the tyre to the strut. A 5mm spacer solves the issue. That said the ideal size on a classic with the STI 7.5J alloys is 215x45x17.

It will also depend on waht suspension you have. Standard struts, what make of coilover, inverted non inverted. What camber you are running etc etc etc
