over sized tyres and odd width with 4x4
Hi,
I have some sti 16" rims with 205x50x16 all round.
2 wheels need new tyres as the outside edge has worn. Will there be any probs with putting 2 front or rear tyres with 225 wide and the other 2 205?
Then when the other 2 have worn replacing them with 225's
Just trying to get a bit more width on the tyre without replacing the 4
cheers
Daniel

Theres a whole host of problems. Dont do it. It is never a good idea especially with a 4x4 to mix tyre sizes. A 215/50/16 will have a larger diameter 205/50/16 and a larger rolling radius. This will lead to the diffs, drive shafts giving up the will to work, then there is the ABS that will follow suit and a very expensive bill awaits.
I would also only ever change tyres up one size, very occasionally two but 215/50/16 is the largest I would want to take them without changing the alloys.

You're welcome. People even say that with 4x4 you shouldnt mix old tyres with new as the worn ones will have a slightly different rolling radius. Im not sure if thats a little ott but it shows you how significant changing the whole size is.

hi,
not sure to either question, just got the car and its not on the road. The tyres are are pretty good all round just totally gone on the inside. I will get it on the road and get the geo checked.
thanks

If each tyre is worn by the same amount on the inside (in particular the fronts) it sounds like you have a fast road set up. If there is additional wearing on the outside that would indicate that your tyres are underinflated but it doent sound to be the case here.
